Re: Nectar in the Brood area

Well... What you said makes sense. I will keep the medium, deep, medium, deep, medium+ in mind for next year. Also, like you said, the deeps below the queen excluder are just about completely full/capped. They are putting some honey above the excluder, but not as mush as I'd like. Was hoping to keep...

Nectar in the Brood area

Trying to figure out how to prevent the girls from filling up the brood area with nectar during the Honey flow. I seem to be able to prevent/manage/control swarming during population growth by balancing out my yard. But I don't know what to do about the backfilling situation. Most of my hives are do...

4/18/21 - 3 swarms in 1 grapevine

When my wife and I initially got the call, it was just the top and middle swarm. We put a nuc up to the middle swarm and got hem to walk in. The top swarm was way a lot harder to get in. We took the top off the deep, scooped handfuls of bees in, closed the top and went to get a bite to eat as it was...

Re: Nectar flow

When its time to add another honey super, do I put it on top of the existing (nearly full) super or below it?

Thanks!

Re: Drones 2021

I've seen a lot of Drones in my stronger hives too. That is why I will be equalizing my yards, again, tomorrow. I'd like to minimize my swarms this year, as I'd like to pull 400 - 500lbs of honey. Time will tell all though.

Re: Drones 2021

Inspected 11/15 hives in my back yard, yesterday.. Only one was really strong. It had 4 frames that were 70 - 75% capped brood on both sides. I did notice in that hive some Drone brood. But, that was the only one. Still have 4 more to go and another 7 in the out yard.

When you overheat sugarwatwr for the bees

What is it called when you overheated sugar water? I know when you do so it is toxic to the bees.

Thanks

Small cluster (with brood) in Medium super

Hi everyone, As stated in the subject line, I have a small cluster( maybe one full side of a deep ) that has taken residence in a medium super. The medium has about 4 full frames om honey in it. What can I do with it? Should I make a double screen board, with a 3" x 4" slot in it; put the double scr...

Re: Small hive beetles

I have 2 yards. The bees at the house have not really had a problem with beetles. My outyard, in Jamestown, on the other hand, those hives have an abundance of beetles. Worse I'm seen out there in a while.

Re: Paper combining

I've done it that way before (queenless on top), with good success. Its just that the queenright hive is a nuc and the queenless is a 10-frame. The queenright hive is strong enough I can put it in a 10-frame. So I'll put them in the 10 frame for a day, then put the queenless on top using paper combi...

Paper combining

When doing a paper combine, does it have to be queenless on top of queenright? Or does it really matter?

Thanks.

Found dead queen in introductory frame

Hi everyone, Last Friday, I split 2 hot hives. Introduced mated queens (in an introductory frame) on Saturday. They seemed like they were going to be accepted. In both cases the hive bees weren't curled up and clinging to the frames. On Sunday, we left for vacation. Checked on them today. Found one ...

Nice job! I've been wanting to give it a try and see if I can be successful as well. Practice up for next year.

Has been as interesting day. . .

Hi everyone, This afternoon my wife texted me a picture of one of our nucs. Seemed there was a bunch of bees hanging out or all 4 sides of the hive top feeder I put on it a couple of days ago. She put a robbing screen on it, just in case. After I arrived home, I went out to see what was going on, as...

Hi,
I coordinate the GCBA virtual meetings on Zoom. PM me and I'll get you on the invitation list.

I would be interested in meeting other beeks in High Point. PM me. It would be nice to compare notes.

Re: Honey supers on Brood boxes

I'll be doing mite inspections this weekend, hopefully. With 23 hives, I'm thinking it will take a while.

Are you only doing OAV now? Or what would you treat with this time of the year? For <3 mites? For>3 mites?

Thanks.
