Re: latest date to install a package

I don't think you will be able to find a package for sale around here when it would be later than you would want to install one. We hive swarms throughout June, many in the 3lb range. With proper feeding and management, they can make it. Much beyond that, I would be hesitant to try and get a package...

From the description of events, this roughly 1lb swarm is an afterswarm of a colony high in the homeowner's oak tree. I put the bees in a nuc and will check queen status in a day or two.

Swarm 4/16/21

Swarm-4-16-21_IMG_0476.jpg I just got home and finished hiving this 3+/-lb swarm. I got the call last night at about 9:00pm about bees that came into a magnolia at about 4:00pm. It was 42F and the bees were clustered about 12 feet up. I vacuumed over half and then was able to shake the rest into my...

John Payne-Equipment & Drawn Comb

John Payne called today (4/15/21) and asked me to post for him. He is in Stokesdale, and is getting out of beekeeping because of health issues. He has bee equipment and drawn comb that he wants to sell. His number is (336) 209-6594.

Re: Capped queen cell ABOVE excluder? What to do?

Find the best bee book you can get and give it to your bees to read. I'm in the same situation with a hive at the Arboretum, but for a different reason. I put on queen excluders but deliberately put some brood above the excluder to encourage the bees to come through it. I now have a queen below and ...

Re: Nectar flow

Wow royl! I need you to come and give my bees an inspirational talk.

My strong hives have had foragers rocketing out for the last several days. I had put a honey super on them earlier, but plan on checking today to see if I need to an another super. Hope so.

Swarm 4/5/21

Swarm-4-5-21_IMG_0473.jpg Just got back from collecting this +/- 2lb swarm about 5 miles from the house. I declined a swarm yesterday. The call came from South Boston, Va. My 4 strongest hives at the house have gone into swarm mode. I was able to locate the queen and move each of them them and a go...

Re: Small hive beetles

It was an ugly winter for early bee build up, but not ugly enough to knock down small hive beetles. I am crushing scary numbers of SHB on the inner covers of some of my strong hives that get partial shade during the day. I am in the process of doing some supering for the flow (if the next 2 freeze n...

Re: Nectar flow

Getting comb drawn requires lots of young bees, lots of nectar or sugar water, warm weather, and bees that are numerous enough that they need space. This is also the scenario that can trigger swarm mode, especially if the brood area gets crowded. Swarms are really good for getting comb drawn since, ...

Re: Nectar flow

I'm not sure why you would move the split. True, the old foragers will return to the original hive site, but as long as you make sure the new site has pollen and nectar (sugar water) until nurse bees become foragers, things should work out. I just located the queen in a very strong hive and moved he...

I have more drones flying and a lot walking around on frames. I have not heard of any swarm calls in the area yet.

Re: Nectar flow

Usually the main flow starts around mid-April. From the amount of things blooming now and the way my stronger hives are foraging, there may be something of a flow going now. I am not seeing a lot of burr comb or a lot of new white wax where bees could be drawing out or repairing old comb, so at leas...

Re: Drones 2021

I saw my first drone flying this afternoon at my house hives. There are many healthy looking drones walking around on frames in the stronger hives, and a few dead ones and crawlers on my driveway pad. If things get and stay reasonably warm, it looks like swarm season might not be far off.

Re: Need advice on weak colony

If your weak hive has a queen and some brood, consider removing the lowest box if the bees are not using it. You can put it on later if they need the space. I did that with 4 ok, but not strong hives, during this last warm spell. It is a bit early to buy queens, and I am not seeing drone activity in...

Re: Drones 2021

I went through some of my stronger hives yesterday. There were small amounts of burr comb with drone larvae, and a small amount of capped drone brood in some of the comb. I did not see any drone pupae in the burr comb I broke apart and no drones walking around on comb. The strongest hive had queen c...

Re: Red Maple

I looked in on the bees at the Arboretum this afternoon. They have been working leatherleaf mahonia and were working winter honeysuckle, though this is a little past its prime. I have shims on both hives and was a bit surprised that the stronger hive has begun to build small amounts of burr comb. I ...
