Swarm 5/14/21

I got a call late yesterday afternoon, just before brief showers passed through our area. I collected a 3+ pound swarm, conveniently clustered on a small, low branch of a tree. I called Stadiem and he agreed to provide housing for them, so I delivered a bucket of bees. The day before yesterday, Ski'...

Swarm 5/6/21

I picked up a nice 3+lb swarm late this afternoon on W. Gate City Blvd. It was clumped on the branch of a tree about 7 feet up. I backed the truck up, stood in the bed, and was able to shake the bees into my swarm bucket. I buckled them in on the passenger side of the truck, drove them home and put ...

Re: Swarm/Move In 4/29/21

These are about 10 feet from my hives. I still have one bait hive in a tree at the back of my next door neighbor's yard. I don't expect to catch my own swarms with these bait hives. These tend to be swarms that come in from other locations. My swarms go to tree branches, etc. to scout locations that...

Swarm/Move In 4/29/21

I have 2 bait hives set up on my driveway pad. They have been scouted before, but no move ins. This morning, I put a drop of lemongrass oil on the landing board of each, and almost immediately, both were heavily scouted. I did not think anything would conclude with the wind like it was, but at aroun...

Re: Bees on Hive wall - What to do?

If there is not a huge amount of brood left behind, my inclination would be to wait and watch. In 4 days you should see queen cells if the bees are making an emergency queen. I'm not sure I would want to pay for and risk a new queen in that set up, but if you want to give it a go and see what happen...

Re: Did I kill queen

I've done the same thing using a push tube. It happens. Hopefully, your queen will recover. Mine did not. I like to have marked queens and have switched to picking the queen up by her 2 wings. I come from behind her to catch her and her wings. She goes still and her abdomen curls forward. I switch h...

Re: Tulip Poplars blooming!

A good number of blooms are open on my tulip poplar, but I can still see unopened buds. Most of the holly is done around the house. If I can keep the bees from swarming, I hope poplar will be in this year's mix.

Re: Local bee group on Facebook

I think we may be trying to accomplish different things with the different outlets. This forum may be old and slow, but with input that goes back years, and with a steady contribution of observations by a reasonable number of participants, we are trying to build a base of local knowledge and not jus...

I would put it below. I think the bees like to complete an upper box of honey and then move down.

It was about 4 feet high. I could put my hand around the branch and give it a good shake into a bucket.

Re: latest date to install a package

I don't think you will be able to find a package for sale around here when it would be later than you would want to install one. We hive swarms throughout June, many in the 3lb range. With proper feeding and management, they can make it. Much beyond that, I would be hesitant to try and get a package...

From the description of events, this roughly 1lb swarm is an afterswarm of a colony high in the homeowner's oak tree. I put the bees in a nuc and will check queen status in a day or two.

Swarm 4/16/21

Swarm-4-16-21_IMG_0476.jpg I just got home and finished hiving this 3+/-lb swarm. I got the call last night at about 9:00pm about bees that came into a magnolia at about 4:00pm. It was 42F and the bees were clustered about 12 feet up. I vacuumed over half and then was able to shake the rest into my...

John Payne-Equipment & Drawn Comb

John Payne called today (4/15/21) and asked me to post for him. He is in Stokesdale, and is getting out of beekeeping because of health issues. He has bee equipment and drawn comb that he wants to sell. His number is (336) 209-6594.
