Re: Bees at the Cooperative Extension

I just did another check on the bees and used the weedeater in and around the bee fence. One hive has re-queened and is building slowly, while the other has its original queen and seems to be sputtering along. Neither has built up to the point of drawing all of the frames in the deeps housing them. ...

Re: Aggressive Hive - What to do

Back to the original problem-aggressiveness: If you do have a laying queen, the re-queening may calm the hive down. This can take a number of weeks since the old queen's daughters need to be replaced by the new queen's workers. If you have a mated queen in there now, she has been unable to start the...

Re: Aggressive Hive - What to do

If you have open drawn comb, I would put a significant amount in. If you have a queen, you want to give her a decent area to lay in. The first time I ran into this problem, Wally had me put a super of comb just above the bottom board and a super of it above what had been the first box above the bott...

Re: Aggressive Hive - What to do

More information-more possibilities. If your hive is nectar bound, the queen, if present and if mated, may have nowhere to lay. That can also explain no eggs, no brood, no acceptance of caged queen.

Re: Aggressive Hive - What to do

There are lots of questions that can use answers. Has the queenless hive gone laying worker (more than 2 eggs in a cell, eggs on side of cells, possibly eggs on top of pollen)? If so, they may be reluctant to accept a new queen. If they haven't gone laying worker, I would put a frame of eggs and lar...

Re: Swarm-5/19/22

The bees came out of the hive and clustered about 2 feet away in some vines surrounding my mulch pile. I shook a clump of them back into the hive at that spot and put the inner cover on. The rest of the bees went to it during the day. I put the outer cover on and then left the hive alone for a few d...

Swarm-5/19/22

Swarm_51922_IMG_0719.jpg I came outside about 5:30pm today and saw this swarm about 12 feet up. The picture does not do it justice. I estimate it to be about a 5lb swarm. I got my inspectors jacket, ladder and bee vacuum and started to work. After taking about 15 stings, I went back to the house an...

Multiple Swarms from One Hive

I got a 1lb swarm Sunday (5/15/22), a 500+/- bee swarm Tuesday (5/17/22), and a 2lb swarm came out this morning, 5/18/22. The 2lb swarm may be in my bait hive at the back of the yard. If not, a significant number of them went there by mistake and are separated from the swarm. The very small swarm ha...

Bees at the Cooperative Extension

CooperativeExtensionBees_IMG_0703.jpg Vern Allen headed up our ongoing effort to move bees into a better location at the Cooperative Extension. While not perfect, the location provides for more sun during the day and better drainage patterns for water. The hives face south and will get out of shade...

Re: Age of queen

I make the assumption that primary swarms this time of year have an old (last year's) queen and mark them with last years color (white). IF I know the swarm is an afterswarm from one of my hives and I get them, that queen gets this year's color. Somewhere around mid-June I may make the arbitrary dec...

Swarm-4/16/22

Swarm_41622_IMG_0701.jpg These bees came out of a nuc I over wintered. I saw swarm cells in the nuc on 4/11/22 and moved 1 super with capped queen cells onto another nuc set up then. I did not look for or purposely move the queen. Swarm Commander brought the swarm to the front of this bait hive and...

Swarm & Move In 4/14/22

I picked up (vacuumed) a 5-6 pound swarm about a block from my house yesterday morning. They were not happy bees. They had been in a bush long enough to build a few square inches of comb and put pollen in 1 cell. My guess is that the dwindling honey supply and yesterday's unstable atmosphere made th...

Swarms-4/11/22

Lots of activity yesterday. I had a primary and an afterswarm at the house and heavy scouting of an unintended bait hive. I also took a call about a swarm in Lindley Park. After giving the caller 2 different sets of 3 people from our swarm list, she called to confirm that 1 of the keepers came and c...

I got home from the Arboretum this afternoon to see this swarm settling in. The dogwood they are on is a foot or so away from the azalea bush that has been getting swarms. I had to use the bee vacuum to get this one.

Swarm Call-4/4/22

I got a call about a swarm on a pine tree near the ball park concession stand at the Greensboro Arboretum. I called Phil Queen. He didn't locate the swarm on 4/4, but did on 4/5/22. He said it was a very large swarm of dark but docile bees. He did not think that they came from my Arboretum hives bas...

The bees are showing NO interest in cleaning frames with the nectar flow we have going now.

Today's swarm came to the same convenient location as the 4/1/22 swarm. Apparently the smell of a recent swarm is even stronger than the power of Swarm Commander.

Swarm-4/1/22

Swarm_4122_Part 1_IMG_0685(1).jpg Swarm-4122-Part 2_IMG_0684.jpg I came home from the Arboretum early yesterday afternoon to hear a loud buzz and see the last of a cloud of bees gathering at the back of my yard. I wasn't sure if this was 1 or 2 swarms, but they eventually united in the hive at the ...

Re: Swarm catch 3/30/22

It's always nice when a plan works out. Other bees were busy as well. I got 2 calls yesterday and gave both callers 3 names and numbers from the swarm list. The first was at Dudley High School. They let me know Jack Fleming was coming to collect it. The other was near Bennett. I don't know who went,...
