Re: Has been as interesting day. . .

I may have had this happen and just didn't notice. I wonder if placing the hive top feeder attracted the new colony, food is hard to come by right now. May have been do or die for the new colony.

Re: Swarm 6/8/2020

Checked the hive two days ago, no brood, maybe that is what is meant by maiden swarm?

Swarm today

Captured large swarm today around 11:30 AM. May have been multiple queens in one large multicluster swarm. Overwintered hive swarmed about 6-8 weeks ago, captured and placed in the hive that swarmed today. Second generation swarm from overwintered hive.

Community bucket feeders

Made 3 bucket feeders. Bees seem to like them. Anyone using this or similar type community feeder? What are the pitfalls in using these? Met a fellow at Costco who claimed to have Many hives and uses this type feeder exclusively. I guessed he was a bee keeper by the 6 each 25 lb bags a sugar in his ...

captured swarms not staying in hive

Had 3 hives make it through winter, swarming started around mid March, have captured about 8 swarms so far, missed a few possibly. Of the 8 captures have only retained 5. After placing in hive the swarm will leave and cluster on a near by tree. Have re captured many twice before they stick, some 3 t...

Re: Swarm? Changed thier mind?

Thank you for the help.

I won't be able to split as I am on the way to Tampa.
Won't return until Friday.

Looks like nature is going to handle this one.

Thanks again to both of you.

Swarm? Changed thier mind?

Had a hive appear to swarm yesterday. Had a vacant hive set up near by. They seemed to be interested in the vacant box then retreated to the original hive. Is this normal? Will they probably swarm today? Below is the Youtube address of a video of the hives. Can't figure out how to attach the video t...

swarming hive

Checked our 2 hives this evening, suspected the strongest had swarmed. Looked through the surrounding trees and found them in one about 20 feet up. They are not clustered but "wrapped" around the tree trunk. I think they may be trying to set up a new hive. Too high for me to climb, thinking about cu...

Re: moving a brood frame

Thanks Mr J for the advice. We were able to clean out the SHB effectively. No larvae seen since cleaning. We check daily for SHB, find about 2 adults per day now. We will use the freeze method on any infested frames we find. Thought about rotating non brood frames in this hive with drawn comb we hav...

moving a brood frame

Have a very weak hive, bees cover about 2-3 frames. SHB damaged. Considering moving a frame of brood from another very strong hive. If I move a frame, making sure the queen is not on the one being moved, can I leave the nurse bees on it? Afraid there are not enough bees in weak hive to tend and prot...

Newbee first swarm

Started with 2 hives last spring, lost one over winter, the other looked strong this spring. Planned to take a stab at splitting but worried that it was too cold. Thought I'd do it this weekend, but the bees beat me to it. Started swarming about 11:00 am. Clustered in a cedar about 30 feet from orig...

Re: Dead hive

The Queen was still there along with about 30 other bees in a small bunch. Looks to me like they died from cold temperatures. There was no sign of any eggs, larvae, or debris in the empty brood cells. The empty brood cells are very dark colored and brittle. May have been brittle because it was cold ...

Dead hive

Have 2 hives, 10 months old. One is doing fine , appears strong, the other has complete die off. Opened dead hive today, found small dead cluster, about 30 bees, around dead queen. 3 mediums above first medium (where queen was) were 80% full of capped stores. No slime or evidence of wax moth. Comb lo...
