Re: First swarm 2019

Nice job, Wally.

I put up a Swarm bait box late Sunday. Went and checked on it today, and there were about 8 or 9 bees checking it out. How do you know when the bees have move in?

How long do I wait?

Let's say I caught a swam. Do I leave them there for a couple of days, or do I bring them home as soon as I notice them? Once home, then what? Do I leave them confined for 3 days, so they will re-orient when I finally let them out? Or, do I just bring them home and transfer them to their permanent h...

Re: Drones 2019

I've seen a LOT of capped Drone cells in my strong hive; as well as some out flying around.

LOTS of drones

Did a quick inspection of my STRONG hive to find the Queen has 7 frames of brood, on the same half of a 2 deep setup. On the 7 frames, 4 of them a LOTS of capped Drone cells. Lots, like 200 to 300 of them. I only saw 1 or 2 practice Queen cells. I put all the Brood frames in the bottom box; put the ...

Re: Swarm catching equipment

Huh, didn't think about the home owner/caller NOT wanting the bush/tree trimmed a little to get the bees. Guess I'll start on a Bee vac. What vacuum head do you use?

Thanks,
Duane

Swarm catching equipment

As a new beek, and new to catching swarms, what equipment is good to have on hand? I'm NOT referring to catching swarms in bait boxes.

Thanks,
Duane

Bunch of dead bees outside of hives

This is my first winter and still learning. The other day, u noticed about a good size handful of dead bees on the ground, in front of the hives. My assumption is , these are dead summer bees and/or the hive reducing its size for winter. Am I wrong? Do I have something to be concerned about? Thanks,...

Apiary preparations for Hurricane Florence

Hi everyone,

I have an 8 foot long stand with 3 hives on it. Aside from strapping the hives down to the stand, what else can I do to help keep them from possibly being blown over?

Thanks,
Duane

Re: NCSBA 2018 Summer Meeting July 19-21, 2018 Flat Rock, NC

This will be my first time attending. Is there somewhere GCBA'ers meet?
I'm leaving Thursday morning. Is there a group caravan out?

Thanks,

Re: Swarm-7/6/18

Hi Jacob,

You probably don't remember me. We've met several times. I did fill out the online form to have my name added to the list. But its all good. Still a newbee. I'll concentrate on getting my three hive to overwinter.

Thanks,
Duane

Re: Swarm-7/6/18

I wish someone had told me. I go to that Wendy's just about every day. I work at Qorvo (formally RFMD), and live less than 5 mile from there. I could ALWAYS use more bees.

How can I get 'in the know'?

Here is a site you may want to spend some time on. It is a beekeeping test, and is said to use different questions each time you take it.

Studying for a test. I'm finding conflicting information. Are Honey bees a 2 or 3 caste system??? Is it just the Queen and workers; or Queen, Workers and Drones?

Thanks

IPM board and mite count

How do you use an IPM board with grids? Is is a total count over the whole board we are looking for? Or less than a certain number per square?

Thanks
