The normally accepted temp. for flying is 43, but it may vary a few degrees with different bees and different conditions.

Clustering at 50 only means they begin to gather together for heat and reduce or stop brood rearing. The cluster will expand and contract acording to the temp, all winter.

When I said empty, I meant without honey, pollen, or brood. If we were up north, it would be a problem. This far south the bees can reposition anytime it gets into the forties. That should be sufficient here for them to find it whether it is in the top or bottom. If there were ten totally empty fram...

I don't try and move the bees, but I remove any empty boxes and put them in storage. I don't leave empties on during the winter. The bees don't need to have to heat a lot of unused space.

I would guess about 350.00 for the first year. Compare that to about 3 days on the golf course, minus the hangover. I think it's a pretty good deal. Also, the subsequent years will be cheaper per hive, and the golf course will be more. Then you reap the harvest the second year. One super will give a...

I buy mine at wal-mart for 35--40 cent per pound. If you can find large lots at a better price, then sure, I'll go in with you. I probably wouldn't be able to go more than 3-5 hundred pounds, tho.
Let me know what you find.

When I said hive, I meant whatever you are going to use as a brood chamber. Some use one deep super, or hive body, some use one deep and one super, some use two deeps. Then two supers to go on top of that. I think if you buy a package or nuc, two supers will be more than enough for this area the fir...

New type swarm removal

Norman called me today about a swarm in High Point. I went to the address and found the bees in a wall of the house. The unusual part of it was, it was only the wall, lying flat. The rest of the house was gone. Of all my removals, that was the first wall only I have ever came across.

You will need a hive tool...or screwdriver, or similiar. You will need a hive and two supers for each hive you want to keep, plus a hive for the inevitable swarm you will catch. You will need a mentor...There are 50 to 75 at the Guilford County Beekeepers assoc., free for using, who meet the second ...

hive body painting

First, let me say welcome... I think a good exterior latex paint will protect 3 to 4 times as long as untreated, also. Maybe even longer. It also doesn't cost 34.00 a gallon. The last I bought at Swerwin-Williams, as Kurt said, a mis-match, retailed for 14.99 a gallon. I got 5 gallon for 32 dollars....

Bees for sale

Having caught a number of swarms, made splits, and made a few extractions, I am over run with bees. I need to sell a few nucs or hives in order to buy boxes to install the next calls.

Well, there was a hive in Greensboro in a tree that the people wanted removed, so I did. I cut all the limbs off, cut the tree level with the truck bed, slid the tree onto the truck, still upright. Tied it off from all four sides and came home, tree and all.

Hi, Guest...Sign up and join us. We need all the participation we can get. And Welcome. Kurt inadvertantly gave me the one in Greensboro.

Kurt, The house that needed the scaffold sent me a swarm to the ground. I must be living right.

No splits, but one of mine swarmed yesterday and headed toward Julian. Keep an eye open for them.

I caught a swarm in Greensboro yesterday, and two in Sophia today. I would think swarm season is here full bore.

I have heard of them being further north than here, traveling in packages and having to be requeened. You may get them this spring if you buy packages or queens from the south.
