Re: My First Swarm

It will have about 1 1/2 inch space between the bottom of the frames and the bottom of the box if you leave them in there very long.

Re: My First Swarm

IF You mean 5 frames per super, you can wait as long as you want.

IF You meant 5 frames total in 3 supers, get them out ASAP. They will be building comb where there are no frames and you will be doing a cut out.

Re: Cutting back on population size after main flow

That would be too time consuming with 3000 hives, when it can be done with timing only, no effort.

Re: Cutting back on population size after main flow

Most commercial keeps I know pick their hives out of pollination in the middle of a hot day so the foragers are mostly out flying. One of the reasons is to eliminate a lot of loafing foragers when in the home yards. They rob less, and go through less stores during the dearth, or when being fed in th...

Re: Swarm comes to me

Definitely nice. I had one come in to old equipment last Friday. Checked it yesterday and she is laying heavily. About 6 frames of bees, so a good sized swarm.

Re: Legal question

It has been my understanding since I was young, that as long as you keep your swarm in sight, you can go anywhere and retrieve it. If it goes in a hollow tree on somebody's land, you can mark the tree and have legal ownership of the hive. You cannot cut the tree without the owner's permission, but n...

So, if I'm reading right, you turned 1 hive into 3?

Re: Tulip Poplars blooming!

I checked some nucs yesterday that we made up last month. I had to add space, as they had filled everything with nectar and pollen, and were starting to build burr comb to put more in. My eyesight is too far gone to know if the poplar is blooming.

Re: Missing Queen

They are replacing the queen. Are these your only two hives? If you had a strong established hive, you could remove her and start a nuc. Otherwise, I would just let nature take it's course.

Re: Missing Queen

Now go out in the middle of the day and switch places with the hives. The returning foragers will return to the same place they have been, thus equalizing the hives again.

Many times my sugar water will grow a black mold. Maybe it will give them a bit of penicillin, cause I don't bother it.

Some check after 3 to 4 days, but I check for eggs after 7 days. I don't like disturbing them any sooner. Then after finding eggs, I don't disturb them again for 2 weeks.

Re: Freshly extracted raw honey needed

The age of honey doesn't effect the efficiency of it. If it was collected from the plants you are allergic to, it is said to help. If collected from other plants, it may not help at all. It's the regular doses of small amounts of pollen from the honey that causes your body to build resistance.
