Well, you said to..................

Wife texts husband on a cold winter's morning: "Windows frozen, won't open."

> Husband texts back: "Gently pour some lukewarm water over it and gently tap edges with hammer."
>
> Wife texts back 5 minutes later: "Computer really messed up now."

Re: Survivors?

To each his own when it comes to keeping bees, but I never clear the snow from an entrance. It will keep the wind out and insulate the hive. No air less than 32 degrees will get to snow covered areas. Also, the bees will melt an exit before it gets to 43 F., where the bees start to go out.

Re: Hive Placement in Small Back Yard

Will depend on the bees you have, the weather, and other things. They may be fine for many mowings, then tell you to go away the next time you mow. Most times, it's fine, but stay on guard and be prepared to suit up if they tell you to.

Re: Starting Brood Box with New Package

""I am an newbie here so I am sure these questions are basic for most of you guys."" There isn't a beekeeper alive that wasn't a newbee at one time. ASK AWAY! As Rob said, start with one box, add another box on top when the first one is 80% or more full. Place hive in full sun. S...

Try it again. If it doesn't work now, reply and I'll try again.

Re: Looking for hands-on experience with bees

I always heft the hives. It keeps me in practice if nothing else.

Re: Looking for hands-on experience with bees

I had a couple over, too. Had a good time showing them around in the hive and got to evaluate it at the same time. Found capped brood, but no open brood or eggs. Hopefully, she just shut down during this last cold spell and will start again now that it is warmer. Added a few partial frames of honey ...

Re: Jan & Feb Feeding

Freezing isn't the problem. Bees will NOT take sugar water that is less than 55 degrees. 1 to 1 is to get the queen to lay eggs. 2 to 1 is to feed the bees that you have now.

Herb, if you don't have any, come down here and get some BT. Spray all those frames before the wax moths get to them.

That's a shame. If I have any over winter, I'll give you a nest of them in the spring to get you going again.

Re: What's this red pollen in November?

I don't know, but my yard is covered with a million little red flowers no bigger than a pin head. Don't know what it is, nor if the bees work it.

Sounds to me like worried parents. If the weights are good, relax and start Xmas shopping. Forget the bees until after solstice.

Re: Help With Hive Inspection In High Point

Thanks, Rob. Donwal, there is always someone available to lend a hand. I just happened to have a problem at home that is keeping me close, but I would if no one else had stepped up.

To all other members, don't be shy about asking. That's why we have the club.

Rather than PM, please answer her here, so we can know she has help. It would be hard for me to make arrangements, but I can if no one else is available.
