Snow Covered Hives

Thought I would share some pictures of my snow covered hives. My hives are sitting on cement blocks. http://i524.photobucket.com/albums/cc330/Starlight4258/Snow%2009/snowonhives12-19-1.jpg More picture links http://i524.photobucket.com/albums/cc330/Starlight4258/Snow%2009/Friday12-18-09.jpg http://i...

Jacobs & Wally, my sentiments exactly! I'm not willing to take 90-100 percent losses if treatments that are qualified as organic are somewhat effective and available. I don't agree that we should ignore the problem we caused. Glenn Apiaries breeder queens are instrumentally inseminated and a lit...

I agree with ski, This is the wrong time of year to have hive top feeders above your bees. The temperature of the syrup is too cold for the bees to take it. Plus, the syrup will cause more condensation inside the hive possibly dripping on the clustering bees, wetting them. Bees getting wet this time...

ski,
Thank you for posting this info.
Great timing.
I'm out, planning to buy more tomorrow.
It takes a LOT of sugar to make fall sugar syrup,
2 parts sugar to 1 part water.

The “Mite Away™ Quick Strip”

This new generation of Varroa control works by not only killing Varroa on the bees, MAQS™ targets the next generation of mites before they even emerge, killing them directly were they live and breed. It is effective, killing over 95% of Varroa under the cap. General distribution is being targeted fo...

I didn't get an opportunity to remove the count sheets today,
it has rained all day.
I will post results tomorrow, as soon as I get them.
NOT impressed with ApiLife Var at this time!

Thanks Ski, I don't think I can use the Apiguard this late in the year in my area. The lows here are well below 60, most nights are 40's to low 50's . We got down to 30 overnight about a week ago! Thanks Wally, I'm considering the fogging method. another friend suggested doing a short treatment with...

If anyone have any ideas, thoughts or suggestions on a method
that could help bring down the mite loads this time of year,
without harming the bees of course.
Please share!!

Ski, I agree with you. The goal should be to have healthy bees going into winter! Saturday 10/ 17 the treaments on hives #2, #5, #6, #8, #9 & #10 will be complete. The rainy weather did not allow 10X powdered sugar dusting on the hives so, I decided to add 1 ApiLife Var wafer in each of the hiv...
