Re: Swarm-Abscond Calls-8/22
I caught two mini absconds/swarm too. I am close to the PTI. Both landed on a fence post that I sprayed with swarm commander about a month ago. Saw relatively small queens. Fortunately I have some extra bees that I can use to combine with them.

Re: Overwintering a 5-frame NUC
I am all mediums too and have been overwintering nucs for a few years now. I overwinter 5-frame medium nucs in 5x5 configuration and use a piece of styrofoam under the top cover as insulation. I think having a third box does help with extra feed as I often need to feed them as we get out of winter. ...

Re: Removing lower hive body in winter
I am using 8-frame mediums only including nucs. Though there are more frames to go through when doing an inspection, I like the ease of swapping frames between brood boxes and supers and there is only one type of frame to purchase.

I have been overwintering medium nucs in 5x5 configuration with no issues as long as they have enough food.

Re: Swarm caught 5-27
It makes perfect sense. Thanks for the sound suggestion in marking her with the last year's color. Since the swarm was a decent 3-lb size, it'd be safe to mark her with blue. I plan to use the colony to get as much comb as drawn possible but have no plans to graft from that queen because of the very...

Swarm caught 5-27
I don't consider myself a lucky person when it comes to catching swarms as this is the first time a swarm that's not mine moved into one of my swarm traps. I had a 10-frame medium size cardboard box with an old comb in it. Though it is somewhat smaller than the recommended size (also have 2 8-frame ...

Thanks for the heads-up. Fortunately they never caused a major for me yet but it is important to keep their numbers in check. Have been using beetle blasters for a while but did not get good results yet.

Re: Oxalic treatment using fogger
I think you got lucky as this particular method had been discussed at length in various bee forums including beesource (e.g., https://www.beesource.com/threads/alternative-mite-management.366161/#post-1845479). Unfortunately, efficacy of this method is questionable at best. You may want to consider ...

Re: Oxalic acid wands
If you plan to grow your apiary and have power nearby (I use an 150ft extension cable), it is much better and way faster to use band heater style vaporizer. I built mine a few years ago and it's still going strong with no issues. Here is the thread on beesource at https://www.beesource.com/forums/sh...

Wand Style Oxalic Acid Vaporizer - Sold
I have a used Wand Style Oxalic Acid Vaporizer which works great in eliminating varroa mites from beehives. I have recently upgraded to new vaporizer, that's why I am selling this one. You need to have a 12V battery to run the vaporizer. The vaporization of oxalic acid in beehives is a proven method...
