I did top to bottom inspections in my 2 hives yesterday. Tons of brood, eggs, and larvae at all stages, thankfully no queen cells.
Some drones in the hive and hundreds of capped drone cells. We're getting close...

Greensboro - set my swarm trap
Yesterday was beautiful, sun shining, birds singing and bees flying. Seemed like a great day to set a swarm trap.
I strapped together 2 5 frame Nuc boxes, put in 2 frames of old black comb and set it on a stump in the yard. Now the waiting begins.

Re: Early February observations/Burr comb in shims
I tossed the medium super on my girls last week. Went out for a brief peek yesterday and they're drawing out comb in the super. Looked in the top deep and the queen has been busy. She's fully carpeted 5 frames both sides with brood. When I looked last week there was just one frame in the upper deep ...

Re: single deep swarm trap???
I've been watching scouts look over the hive for the past few days. Yesterday there were probably 100+/- coming and going throughout the afternoon, seemed to bee interested in the hive box, but not bringing in any resources. This morning just before noon I glanced out my office window and saw a bee ...

single deep swarm trap???
Hey all
I've been seeing a good many honey bees in the adjacent neighbors yard.
Would a single deep with 3 or 4 frames of old drawn comb be a good swarm trap? I'm hoping there will be some swarm scouts in those workers.

Re: New Beeks North Greensboro
We haven't posted an update on the girls in quite a while here. Sad to say we lost the hive Christmas Eve. There were some cleansing flights during the day and the girls were cleaning out a few dead bees while it was warmish. Then the super cold night and we had to go out of town to help a dear frie...

Re: New Beeks North Greensboro
Right now we don't have extra drawn frames. I do have bare foundation frames and can split if needed.
This year's goal is getting both deeps and a medium drawn out with enough resources for them to winter comfortably.

Re: New Beeks North Greensboro
three weeks since we installed the nuc. Lots of bees, lots of brood, lots of pollen and nectar or funny honey since we've been feeding. Bottom box is 8 frames full, so we took a little burr comb off the top of the frames and inner cover and added a second deep. Removed the entrance reducer while I w...

Re: New Beeks North Greensboro
We took a very quick peek in there last night. Lots of bees have emerged in the past 4 days. They consumed about 1/2 gallon of 1:1 syrup. They are packing in the pollen and putting up fresh nectar, maybe the 1:1 syrup They've started drawing comb on one of the 3 frames I put in the box on Friday eve...

Re: New Beeks North Greensboro
We have everything pushed together nice at tight. There's a little bit of "extra space" outside of the outermost frame. I thought that would be better than space outside of the feeder. I didn't want to tempt them into drawing comb on the outside of the feeder. I'll quickly crack it open to...

New Beeks North Greensboro
Hi all, Tommy and Anne Samuels here. We attended joined the beekeeping classes after they had already gotten started, but decided to jump in no matter what. Picked up our Nuc on Friday from Beez Needz and installed the girls Friday afternoon. bees.jpg They went into our 10 frame deep along with a 1 ...
