Nuc Wanted (late season)

Lost a hive in the storms last week, the other hive isn't strong enough to split, so trying to find a late season nuc that I can let use this drawn out comb and a large deep box of honey stores. Severely bad luck last week....

Aggressiveness After Formic Pro

Backstory, thriving hive that has been pretty calm so far. Added another deep about 3 weeks ago and they've filled it up already. 12 days ago they got their first formic pro treatment since we had a 3 day "cool" spell, similar to the past few days where they got treatment 2. Serving the hi...

Another Dead Hive (Venting as much as Asking for Options): I suck as a Beekeeper

I started up in 2021 with a hive of Italian Bees. They did pretty well the first season, expanded well, made it through the winter and started to struggle from there. After our major cold snap in 2022 they neve seemed to recover and were pretty much a dead hive by spring of this year. In 2022 I got ...

Re: Robbing Bees Question

Well the relentless robbing killed the hive :( and then the wax moths took over. What a mess.

Super grumpy that I've lost 3 of 4 hives this year. 2 just collapsed, 1 robbed to death, and 1 is still rocking it.

Not a really good motivation....

Re: Robbing Bees Question

Interesting, that's somewhat like my setup, the robbers found their way into the entrance on the top part of the screen. Which is why I buttoned it up completely which I know is a risk.

Re: Robbing Bees Question

What do you mean. You would never have a robber screen on a bottom entracne hive. I am not sure I follow.

As far as moving hives. That only works when you have a pickup truck and a place to move them to unfortunately

Re: Robbing Bees Question

Consensus online seems to be 72 hours. Closed it up, added water that they can get to, a pollen tray, and fed them. Crossing my fingers.

Robbing Bees Question

All I need some help. You all have probably seen me post that I had a queenless hive get robbed and devastated to the point of consolidating with a smaller NUC Hive I got started this year. Well turns out, they've been robbed, again and again and again and again. The hive right next to them is left ...

Holy cow, the robbing has not let up. I don't think the robber screens are working anymore.

Re: Robbing v2

What a mess on the bottom board. Robbing seems to have died down. So I opened up a tiny entry/exit way. the bottom board is a mess. Is it safe to do a quick peek tomorrow to see how the queen and the hive are behaving if the paper is chewed through?

Re: Robbing v2

The one under attack right now was queenless with no queen cells. Something I have noticed about the Saskatraz are that they never have swarm or supercedure cells, ever. What I tried to do was take the remnants of the Caucasian hive and seperate them with tissue paper (undied) to allow them to get u...

Robbing v2

Gosh where to start. Had a Caucasian package come in late season, set them up with a robber screen on and constant feeding. The robbers attacked, MASS ATTACK, and basically wiped out everything. Mass kill off, all stores gone and the feeder emptied in a few hours. About 200 bees left with the queen....

Re: Weak Hive Advice for 2023

Thanks for the feedback. So to summarize. Do you think I should kill them off (or at least the queen). Or should kill the queen, smoke the daylights our of the workers and shake them into the other hive? Problem is nowhere to "freeze" something this large. But yes, I want 2 hives. In fact,...

Weak Hive Advice for 2023

So Red Maples appear to be in bloom. I've got a hive of Saskatraz that are doing awesome. Bringing pollen back, feeding on the sugar syrup, lots of brood ramping up and t he hive is full of bees. Massive activity. Both 8 frame deeps are full of bees, honey, pollen. On the other had, I have an Italia...

Re: Aggressive Hive - What to do

More information-more possibilities. If your hive is nectar bound, the queen, if present and if mated, may have nowhere to lay. That can also explain no eggs, no brood, no acceptance of caged queen. That's interesting, I thought the hive would sort that out. Should I remove a frame or two of honey ...

Re: Aggressive Hive - What to do

Let me attempt to answer: I suspect there is no laying worker. There are no eggs, larva, or capped brood at all. The entire original brood next is full of nectar now. Meaning, bottom deep is full of fresh nectar in the old brood nest. The sides are capped honey and pollen. Deep on top of that is all...

Aggressive Hive - What to do

Going to try and give as much information as I can, so bare with with me. I have two backyard hives. One is Russian, One is Italian. Both are behind a shed in the back yard 100 ft from the house. About 3 weeks ago, the Italian hive swarmed after a pretty bad infestation with varroa mites. Mites have...
