Re: Wayne's bees

Thanks for the birthday wishes Wally. It is greatly appreciated. I emailed Tate's a few times, and wasn't really able to get much of a response, until today. He replied, apologizing for the delay, and said he would have some in April, maybe May, depending on how the weather reacts (we all know what ...

Re: Wayne's bees

Looking to get some Wayne's bees next spring, wondering if anyone can help. I've been trying to get some of these bees since April of 2012, with no luck. Every time I contact Larry Tate, I either don't get a response, or he's sold out. Trying to get my ducks in a row for spring splits, and was reall...

Re: Contemplating some summer splits

It may give me a little more concern, lol. Heavy feeding and aggressive tipping has always caused robbing this time of year for me. I haven't seen it yet this year though. But if splitting requires feeding heavily and constant opening, it may spell gloom and doom for the splits if the dearth hits. R...

Contemplating some summer splits

I've got a few hives that are double deeps and stocked well. I'm considering splitting each of the double deeps into two singles with mated queens. Looking for a little input on the timing (or if I should not at all). Historically, I've done most of my splits in May at the latest. June I allow them ...

Hickory NC feral colony

Just got an email from a woman in Hickory NC. She has a tree in her yard that got struck by lightening, and fell to the ground. It exposed a honey bee colony. She is hoping someone can come and salvage some of it. Too far for me, and not enough time for me to fit it into my schedule. Anyone willing ...

Are we really that far behind this year?

I've got blackberry bushes littering the edges of my property. Most of the time these bushes bloom between April 10 and April 30. I just noticed yesterday the first swollen blackberry buds, almost a month later than they usually are. I know things got pushed back with the later cold freezes this yea...

Re: Nectar Flow

I noticed some supers were getting filled last check two weeks ago. None capped at that time. I'll check this weekend, add another super if I have to.

Re: Nuc supplier just backed out

Thanks Wally.

Larry was the first on my list to contact. He's out of packages until later in spring (almost summer).

I found a guy in Mocksville that had 3/30 packages. A decent deal, but I'd prefer nucs.

Nuc supplier just backed out

I had an open order for 5 nucs from a guy south of Raleigh to replace some of my winter losses. He called today and just backed out. It's a little too late in the game for me to get anything else. I've called a few places and they are already sold out (or I left messages and haven't heard back yet)....

Re: Purple eyed larvae 2/17/13

I may take you up on the offer later in the season, if it still stands Wally. I generally don't like to experiment with the first batch of queens. I generally find it's better to experiment with queen rearing methods after I have my first set ready. I saw a drone that was evicted last night, dead on...

Re: Purple eyed larvae 2/17/13

Grafting. Dr. Tarpy taught me to avoid walk away splits, when at all possible. I may make up a few nucs from the mated queens, I don't know yet. But I like to have twice as many queens on hand as I need. I can always find a good home for a queen, but it can often be hard to find a queen when you nee...

Purple eyed larvae 2/17/13

Due largely to the unseasonable snow we received yesterday, I noticed this morning that most of the maple blossoms had fallen off the trees around me. Not all, but most. So I figured it would be a good time to throw on another pollen patty. When I cracked the two brood boxes apart, I noticed two dro...

5 Frame Nuc Kits for sale

I made up a few 5 frame deep nuc kits, and have some extras available if anyone is interested. Solid bottom boards, standard deep boxes, inner cover, and your choice of telescoping top (without metal) or English Top (aka Gable top). $32. Or I can throw in 5 Mann Lake frames and foundation for an ext...

Re: Going rate for hives and drawn supers

It depends alot on the time of year. This time of year is often not the best, as the buyer takes the risk of any losses going into winter. I can buy a 10 frame single coming out of florida (or almonds) for around $120-160 in the spring. If I wanted them in 5 frame nuc form, I could probably get them...

Re: too late for splitting hives

So the consensus is that it is too late for splits? Even with mated queens? Just got back from EAS and Mike Palmer recommends splits in fall, so long as you have some type of flow and you can get three brood cycles before the queen shuts down. If we have goldenrod blooming (which in some areas it do...

Re: OPTIONS FOR VARROA MITE CONTROL

I'm not sure if Nancy Ruppert's cost estimations for Apiguard were that accurate.

She put Apiguard down at costing $7 a hive. Dadant sells a 3 kg tub for $90.50. 3 kg will give you 60 treatments. If you need two per hive, that still treats 30 hives. Which adds up to a little over $3 a hive.
