It seems highly unlikely that you will be able to make any honey this year, so I would think your goal would be to build them up to full strength and have strong hives for nex...

I am afraid what you have been observing are other bees robbing your hive.
Without question you hive is dead.
Start calling around and perhaps someone will have some bees. They will be hard to come by this year.

Buckwheat is a great cover crop and the bees love it! My understanding is that if done right you can turn under and get several crops during the year.

I have brought bees to the last 7 field days and plan on bowing out for a while.
I think a hive demonstration would be essential if possible.

I would agree with Wally about the 2 day release under normal circumstances. Fortunately for you, you installed a package. The package was probably made a day ahead of time and they were in transit for a day. Thus your queen already had 2 days of face and pheremone time with the gals in the package....

Thanks to all for the offers of help.
I will need some additional assistance in the next few weeks.

Doug Shaw came over Saturday and was a great help! I had a great time and was able to do some critical spring manipulations.

thanks again,
Kurt

new swarms

Just curious if anyone has seen or heard of any swarming in the area?
I believe that the bees are a couple of weeks late in building up but could see the bees swarming in a few weeks.

I used to take one my weaker hives in October and make an observation hive out of it until spring.
It was a great way of over wintering a weak hive while having bees available for school gigs.
