something new for me
I was out requeening a few hives yesterday and managed to lose the queen from inside her cage. Naturally she headed for the wild blue yonder and I thought I had lost my investment. I looked around the truck hoping she would come back, but could not find her. So I waited for a few minutes doing some ...

queen cups
After inspection today, I just wanted to let everyone know that I observed queen cups in one of my hives. I am feeding this hive heavily, so it is no surprise but I would suppose that we could see swarms in a couple of weeks.

Need some equipment!
I need to place an order to Brushy Mountain and was wondering if anyone is already headed up that way?
I prefer not to make the trip for just a few items.
thanks,
Kurt

I have made and kept bees in a top bar hive. Truthfully, Unless you are really short on cash this may not be a good idea. These hives are hard to feed and difficult to treat. I do not believe that they live as easily in them as a Langstroth style hive but have no eveidence of this. I can show you mi...

I think there are distinct advantages to an 8 frame set up. #1 They are approx. 20% lighter so are better for your back. #2 I believe beekeepers tend to force the bees into what they think is best. Most bees like to work in a chimney fashion building narrow and up. Perhaps the bees favor this. #3 Le...

queen available
I retrieved a queen today and am holding her hostage. If anyone is in need of a queen please let me know.
Bet you can't find one any earlier than this!
Wally, you may want to borrow her for your queen presentation Thursday night.

observations
Well, I missed all that nice weather last week and couldn't look at my bees until today. Found 1 deadout, 3 week hives which I combined and the other 60 look really good. Well most of them anyway. better than I thought. It took me 2 1/2 hours to evaluate, feed pollen patties and sugar syrup and do t...

If you were to switch the bottom one to the top, then you would have an empty box on top of a full one. this would be of no use to the bees this time of year. Hive reversal is commonly practiced by many, but do the bees really care? I mean, when was the last time you saw this practice happen in a tr...

I would agree with Wally in that if we were to get a substantial period of cold weather, the bees would not have access to the honey in the super. On the other hand, I believe that bees regularly move honey around in order to keep food where thay need it. But if the temps stay below 50 they will not...

If anyone was to calculate out the value for the dues that they pay I believe they would find that they make money being a member of GCBA. After 7 years the dues should probably be raised to $12. The dues allow us to provide the following for club members: maintain website drinks, plates, utensils, ...

Dadant
I just found out that the Lynchburg VA branch of Dadant will be moving approximately January 20 of this new year. The will be relocating in Chatham, Va which is just above Danville. My calculations put it around 20 miles closer to Greensboro than Brushy Mountain. Obviously this depends on which side...

Winter feeding
Just a note to remind everyone to make sure your bees have enough stores to get through the winter. I had several hives that were light to the point I was worried that they would starve. I fed the day before we were to get some temps in the mid to upper 50's. Checked yesterday and all the food is go...

New World Carniolan Hybrids • The Carniolans are known for their winter hardiness and rapid spring build up. • These bees work well in all areas of the country, are excellent Honey producers and comb builders. They also show resistance to tracheal mites. The Old World Carniolans are not quite so inc...
