Hello Ron,
Three weeks before the honey supers were at 80%. After I asked the question they had consumed all but 20% so I guess there was not much flow. I started feeding after I saw that.
call me crazy but I don't want to lose any hives by starving them.

speaking of swarms
I helped another newbie beekeeper in Charlotte capture a small swarm 60 foot away from his hives. We put the small swarm into a hive. Since the hive is new, he adds sugar water and one of the established hives looks like a super highway to the new hive. They don't fight, just suck down the sugar wat...

Swarm question
This may be the same issue as Ron's scenario. O.K. there was a small swarm I helped with a month ago in Charlotte with another newbie bee keeper. They were on a small crepe myrtle away from the hives. We threw them into a new hive. Here is the weird part. The new hive we started feeding with sugar w...

Feeding Question for this time of year
At the meeting Kurt and others said it was time to feed your bees.. I have honey supers on several hive at 75% worked and the honey supers are not capped. If I supplement with sugar water, won't that define the honey at not 100% pure. Feed with pollen patties??? recommendations are appreciated on th...

Thanks again for the answer Wally. I think I will always leave the food honey supers alone. It was Apigard and even if it is o.k. I prefer no chances. I guess the experienced beekeeper was correct. If regards to the knife question..I have a cold knife from Brushy mountain. Better to get a hot knife ...

wax frame question
I was checking two of my hives today. One has wax frames, the other hive plastic frames. Boths are swarms I captured. The wax is no problem, they are fine. The plastic has combed and worked out a honey super aboove the brood chamber. Even there is access below in the brood, they have not drawn it ou...

Kurt, Have you ever had a queen in the brood, the excluder and then a queen above or would the bees attempt this? I caught a swarm, put them in the brood, added an excluder, and one honey super. I briefly opened the honey super and there was larvae in the honey super. I ran out of sunlight so did no...

wow..o.k. last year I spun in mid June and then in August. This year we were debating whether it was best to keep putting honey supers on and spinning in August. So most people spin more than once or twice during the season? This is pretty exciting to find out. My beeds last year worked out two hone...

How often do you spin?
I spun in late June last year and again in August as I had enough to harvest and enough store for the winter. Only one hive then, now five hives so do most of you wait till August? Earlier?
I bet everyone has a preference so I am curious.
thanks.
