I think I will take everyone's advice on a jacket and veil.
Wally is a better man than I am. If I wear a veil then the guard bees love to get me...plus...one of my hives is a little more aggresive than the other...man...they love to bang on my veil and I don't think they are love taps.

thanks for the replies. I think I will stay with the brood and one medium as this seems to have worked this year plus I supppliment the feed. I have one hive with italians which I can work well around with a veil, jacket and gloves and I have another that are aggressive. You better have protection a...

double or single brood chambers / bee suit questions
Newbie questions: Is there an advantage in North Carolina for a single brood chamber and one medium for the winter or two full size broods. I forgot to ask this question at the last meeting. I have one brood and one medium seperated by a queen excluder and the bees look fine. Two broods = more bees ...

I think I understand what you are saying so I will try to build something similar to try . Not really thrilled about putting chemicals around the hive and I did buy some Guardin the star but if this works it think the Guardstar will be saved for other uses. Let me see if I got this, basically a smal...

I am in Greensboro. Being a newbie it might seem I am over cautious but last year I lost my bees and I don't want that to happen again. Plus, looks like each beekeepers have different answers so I am trying to make since of all this. I guess no one said it would be cheap, but is is kind of fun. Thank...

No, that is perfect and basically what I was asking. I plan on leaving a full and one medium for them, and will add honey supers in the spring. The reasoning I was asking about the feeding is a beekeeper in the south part of the state told us he uses a entrance feeder most of the year when he was no...

Thanks for the information. The brood chamber is good with honey. So if I treat for mites take everything off the brood chamber? No medium. Last year my first bees starved and I lost them all. Would it be possible to pull the mediums, store them for a couple of months while the treatment works (if i...

Thanks Wally. I robbed one super and left one full super for the bees. Above that super is another super with 4 frames somewhat built out. The rest of that super is some wax but no honey. I was asking if it is o.k. to leave it on the hive. Therefore it is 1.5 supers on top of the brood chamber. I pl...

spinning honey in the fall and how many supers to leave.
I was curious how many beekeepers spin honey in the fall, this time of year. My main hive has three honey supers, I was told to leave one full one for the bees and have a brood chamber and one full medium. Two were 80 percent honey, the other 30 percent. Spin one and leave the rest?? I left a full o...

small hive beetles
Hi, I have a hive which I was worked up since the spring. A fellow beekeeper was nice enough to help with getting this started. The hive has some small hive beetles. I have see about 15 at one time and of course kill them with a hive tool. How many beetles are too many beetles? Use Guardstar to dren...

In guilford county. Two experienced bee keepers said they died because I starved them. I got bees from Brushy Mountain late in the year....there was honey and pollen, then according to those guys, there is nothing this time of year....itwas not anything left in the hive. I probably screwed up but I ...

all my bees are dead
I took the course this spring and it was informative. Got a begineers kit, 3 lbs bees, queen. Basically the hive was well and 9 of the frames of the brood box were complete with honey, pollen, and bees after feeding for months. Added a medium one month ago with a queen excluder. Everything looked gr...
