Re: re: is it too late to split a hive?
Makes sense to me Jacob. I have a weak hive I doubt will make it through the winter. The other hives I am actively working for the winter. Usually I end up buying a couple of packages in the Spring to try to allow the existing hives to build for the honey flow. Too many losses, so three of us starte...

When are you throwing on honey supers?
I see red maple trees popping out in southern Guilford County. Given the activity of my hives I don't want them over crowding and swarming. One of the master beekeepers in Forsyth County said start cracking open each hive at a 10 day interval to check for swarm cells starting in March if there is a ...

Four of five for me. I, like Ski, seem to have lost one of my stronger boxes. Very active today.

looks expensive
I was curious if anyone around here has tried the newest gadget versus spinning. www.honeyflow.com From the beekeepers on the other side of the world- the Aussies. Looks like it is pretty expensive to me. Maybe someone with allot more money has tried it and I am curious to see if it really works. So...

Re: corn syrup stores
the cool thing about being a beekeeper is that it does not matter if you are a first year keeper or a six year keeper. Everyone has opinions and generally they are all correct. So , corn syrup or sugar water - either seems fine. (I have an automatic sugar water system - I ask her to have it made so ...

Re: corn syrup stores
I feed with sugar water myself. The new beekeeper bought a ton of pre-made corn syrup from Brushy Mountain. These are being fed to new hives from packages from BM. I don't think the bees care one way or another.
Good luck with your hives.

Re: corn syrup stores
So I was helping the new beekeeper with his new packages a week or two back so I got to look at corn syrup - which is cloudy and so makes sense the "honey" was cloudy so that solves the mystery. It will be good feed stores for the new hives.
Thanks for the group reviewing the mystery.

corn syrup stores
A fellow beekeeper uses corn syrup from Brushy Mountain for feeding. My feeding is pure sugar water 50% when needed before honey supers go on. The fellow beekeeper lost a hive over the winter. One which he was feeding with corn syrup. Thinking maybe the honey super he was using for the winter might ...

Re: swarm boxes near your bee yard
Thanks Wally, Unfortunately I think I am the only beekeep in the neighborhood. I appreciate in the information. Maybe I will be lucky and attract another swarm. ![Embarassed ](./images/smilies/icon_redface.gif)

swarm boxes near your bee yard
Is there any opinion on putting swarm boxes near existing strong hives? Would this give the strong hives a sense to swarm to a box? I am watching my hives much closer this year for queen cells. It would be great to catch a swarm in this way versus new package bees. If I see queen cells, I am going t...

Re: ?? Feeding time ??
I am feeding pretty heavy as the stores are very light so this is my experience for my hives and locations. If a beekeeper is feeding, the bees will continue to build wax comb? The question really is - does it make any sense to have a honey super (extra honey supers) and will the bees build out the ...

Re: ?? Feeding time ??
Thanks Jacobs and that seems like sound advice. This hive is a swarm hive from the Spring. I robbed two weeks back and you might have seen some earlier posts which Wally answered. If the super is not 90 capped I won't take it so I had only recently inspected and saw this honey super at 60%. I left i...

?? Feeding time ??
I have a couple of new hives I started after last years losses. The setup I prefer is two brood chambers then honey supers if they build up enough the first year. Generally I don't get any honey for the first year. Last week i check and had a honey super at 60%. Not enough to extract so I was waitin...

Re: honey collection
But the frames need to be capped for the honey to be ready. Correct? I learned from the course and when I get to come to the meetings not to spin any frames that are not capped.
