Re: Feeding yet?
I considered that as well, feeding all winter but I have seen what freezing will do to a hive. Just inspected two of my hives, one is extremely strong so I only added space for growth to prevent a swarm. Other one I will feed as they have low stores. Nice ideas on the feeders. That is smart and I mi...

Re: honey frames
Thanks for the excellent suggestions. Wally, what is BT???
My wife would be ticked to have honey supers freezing in the freezer so that is a poor option for me.
Air flow and light like Ski suggested is not so good for me - great option - just not for my situation.

Feeding yet?
Is anyone feeding yet? I have a strong hive when warm that is extremely active. Others are not so active yet. The extremely active one scares me they are early. (Russians)

honey frames
Every year I try something new and so far nver little luck so my question is around honey frames. After extraction, I put these away for the next season after the bees have cleaned them out. One year in plastic bags, with some moth balls. One year in a sealed Tupperware unit, one year in the sun in ...

Re: Has this been an "average" honey flow?
Thanks Jacobs. I am leaving my supers on- the ones with honey but not capped without feeding those hives. Maybe they will cap out as Wally does, later in the year. I watch mine carfully this time of year - there seems to be less for the bees and I have lost hives in late July as they ate their store...

I wish...the symptoms last just as long for me. It is much quicker. The Epipen is a good idea just to have around according to the doctor. Better safe than sorry.

Re: Has this been an "average" honey flow?
There was an earlier post of is this a good year for honey. I think it is average. My results, one one honey super per hive for me for existing hives only. New hives take a year to build up. Generally I don't have much honey being added from now on. Wally, Jacobs, when do you guys start to feed? Jul...

anyone get more sensitve to bee stings?
CHeck this out. I started keeing bees 5 years - 6 years ago. I could get stung, the swell 6 -8 hours later. Every year, it gets quicker with the swelling, itching, etc. All part of being a beekeeper. Now, I get stung, and I have 5 minutes before the symptoms occur. No worries. just the normal sympto...

Re: When are the bees coming?
The first couple of years as a new-bee several of us would order and drive together to Brushy Mountain. We must have had eight or ten packages in a Durango with us. The loose bees generally head to the windows and we had no issue.

Re: to re-queen or not to re-queen.
As most of the beekeepers at the meeting laughed about the questions of making a profit a couple months back, that would be me. In the RED is me. Thanks again Wally, to date your advice has been very sound.

delima - add a honey super or second brood
I have a strong hive of Russians. The brood is full, I can add a honey super or second brood. (1) The second brood would double the number of bees. If they don't fill up rapidly I might miss on the spring flow. Especially the poplar which is best for me. (2) Or throw a honey super on, see how it goe...

to re-queen or not to re-queen.
I heard every two years is about the average span for a good queen. After that, the bees notice she is old and not producing and replace her. So what do the master beekeepers do? Replace the queen every two years? Let the hive make a new one when they are ready? So far, my letting them perform the n...

I am a GCBA member in southern Guilford county. The storm prevented me from making the meeting on overwintering. ended up buying Russians last year and babied two hives for a year in particular, as well as my other hives. Early spring when Ray was at the meeting, one died away. The other was strong ...

Losses and honey
I wanted to see how everyone was doing this year. So far, I have lost 7 of 10 hives over the winter and even now. Russians, italians, swarms. Strong hives, well taken care of, and within a couple of weeks, they are gone. Honey production over the last three years continued to decline for me. I am ab...

how often should one replace wax foundation in honey supers?
I read that wax in honey supers after a couple of years should be replaced because toxins become stored in the wax.
This is true for false? If this is the case, should the brood chambers be rotated as well?
Can the wax be used for candles?
