One of the hardest things with beekeeping is knowing what to do in your particular case. For example, Kurt, Wally, and the beekeepers online and from the club are giving great information. What you have to do is listen and act if needed. My Russians are very similiar and have lots of stores built ou...

cleaning wax for candles
what a challenge. I melted down my wax cappings. Not a very pretty color and even though I ran thru a strainer, lots of junk in it. So how is the best way to prep the wax without trah for future candles? Plus, do you wait until the sun bleaches it out? Looking for the pretty color for beewax. Sugges...

feeding time???
so I look at the last messages in regards to feeding. Is everyone feeding? My new bees are good and I am waiting for extra brood supers for the Russians as they are doing well. My other hives have honey supers. I thought you should not feed with honey supers on otherwise the honey will be contaminat...

Wax moth quotes
If wax moths have gotten into some wax frames can you cut out here they were (samll areas) or is it best to toss the frame, or put new foundation into the frame?
I lost a hive and the wax months hit before I knew it.

Pretty cool pics Wally and Ski....you guys are better than me, I could not believe you guys were that close without a bee getting to your face.
Last weekend, just feeding one of the bees got me right between the eyes and I swelled like crazy....you guys are better than me, I am going to wear a veil.

If you are maybe talking about the Imirie shim the AG agent that inspected some of the beekeepers hives I know told them to take that off. I threw mine in the corner and never have looked back. One of my hives the bees prefer to come and go from the inside cover on the top. So they are active from t...

another tip when you are ready to spin for the first time or need to get the bees to move. Purchase Bee Quick from Wally versus Bee Go Bee Go smells like a skunk died 10 years ago....I triple bag the stuff as it smells that bad. Another tip...never ever leave it in a car even for 5 minutes.....your ...

I did the class a couple of years ago so use the painful lessons as already pointed out. Do two hives the first year. It stinks when the one you nutured dies (it was my fault by the way). I always have a extra honey super plus the brood (see above mistake) I don't like the BM plastic entrance feeder...

thanks. Then I will remove the excluders when I get a warm day. This point I would encourage for the beekeeping class. A discussion around the excluder would be good in my humble opinion. Expecially since there are so many thoughts around to use or not to use. I already look forward to the spring to...

I have the brood chamber. then excluder to keep the queen in the brood chamber, generally the bees cluster there. Above the excluder one full honey super. They seemed to grab the honey somehow last year during the winter months even though the cluster was below. If I need to take the excluders I wil...

I use them in the spring on all my hives. Some seem to eat all of them and others seem to eat some but never the full amount (I use half patties). I don't use spacers. Now, a old beekeeper in Charlotte says he puts a small pan with flower in it in front of the hives. Does anyone try this for feeding...

Hi Wally, O.K. what about a bit of an add on question. I have excluders at the brood chamber and a honey super above for extra store. Why? Because I starved mine the first year. This would limit the brood so maybe the question is, do we newbies just need to take it off and only put it on during hone...

to exclude or not to exclude
Question of the day: Do you use a queen excluder or not? I am in my third season, and at the meetings and other talks with beekeepers much more experienced than me, some say the excluders limit growth and the brood areas and queen will generally stop at a certain point and pure honey is in the top m...

Hi Don, Ski anwsered with a great answer. My wife gives me the evil eye because I buy 25 lb bags of sugar. Personally, I do 1:1 in the spring and fall for feeding. Just my preference. Don't feel bad, I went thru the Beekeeping class a couple of years ago and was proud of my one hive until I came bac...
