Swarm - April 26, 2013

I was lucky last week as I arrived at my out yard while a swarm was in the air. They settled on a small pine tree about 6 foot of the ground. I was also lucky because they picked the smallest tree in the brush row. This swarm came out late yesterday and landed in a peach tree about 4-5 foot off the ...

Re: Is this Nosema

Not at all Wally! Treating with fumagilin may still be the best way to go and if its Nosema Ceranae its treat or lose it. Reading a bit more fumagilin can be applied by spraying or drenching. The other question: And don't I run a risk of contaminating all my hives with this sick hive close by? Bees ...

Re: Is this Nosema

If I remember correctly fumagilin is used in sugar syrup and it may be difficult to get the bees to take syrup if there is a nectar flow. Is there another way to administor fumagilin?
Any honey made during a funagilin treatment which may be several weeks should not be used for human consumption.

Re: Is this Nosema

Woodenware can be washed down with water and bleach which can work on the boxes but used frames usually have a waxy coating that makes the water just run off. I have also read that you can put the woodenware in the sunlight and the UV rays will kill the Nosema fungus.

Re: Extra big swarm

That is a big swarm.
My swarms would be about that size if I combine 4 or 5 well several of the biggest swarms I have ever seen.

Re: eggs in burr comb

Just an added note:
When the bees are chained or linked together in comb building operations it is said that they hang in "Festoons".
So your bees were festooning. Makes it sound like they were having fun.

Re: feed question

The syrup should be just fine to feed to the bees. It would be good to let it warm up before putting it in the feeder as the bees will not take syrup if its below 50 degrees.

Wally you are correct.
The foragers will return to the old location or the new hive which is the same thing.
I just liked the procedure.

Re: Feeding yet?

I liked the way Kurt Bower explained it. Its what Wally said just a different way of doing it. .................. Kurt bower wrote: Bees need 2 things to swarm. A queen and field bees. To stop a swarm you have to effectively separate the two. When making the split, you can leave the hives side by si...

Re: Feeding yet?

belewsboy before I went down that road too far I would feel a lot better if I could verify that there were very young larvae and eggs in the hive. I went in some hives today and found two that were 4 medium boxes and were slammed packed with bees but not one capped cell larvae or egg. Nine other hiv...

IBDS - a new-found disease

I signed up for the State Beekeepers meeting but was not able to attend. Did Dr. Tarpy talk about this at all at the meeting? This ezine is also available online at http://home.ezezine.com/1636/1636-2013.03.04.09.15.archive.html CATCH THE BUZZ Colonies with IBDS, a new-found disease, are likely to d...

Re: linseed oil vs paint

Becky, I have not used linseed oil, I painted all of my boxes except for 2 or 3 cedar boxes that I just left natural and they turned somewhat dark. Here are a couple of links from Beesource about using linseed oil, there are other threads if you do a search. http://www.beesource.com/forums/showthrea...

Bees Collecting Pollen Sub

Looks like things are about to bloom but they must not be blooming yet around Whitsett because bees are really collecting the home made pollen sub. I have 3 buckets out and they are all pretty busy. The picture was taken Feb 12, 2013 about 10:30AM. http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w45/Beegood_01/0...

Re: Drones

I have not seen any drones in a few months. The guys that came and talked to us about pollen patties a few years ago had the theory that a hive that over wintered drones was a strong healthy hive, of course feeding pollen patties helped. I have been wanting to go in and clean off the bottom boards a...
