Honey Bee Nutrition workshop Nov 7, 2012 - 7:00-9:00
I received this E-mail from Chatham County, they do a lot of agricultural workshops. I have been to a couple of the beekeeping workshops and they are usually pretty good. The Chatham County Center of North Carolina Cooperative Extension will offer a workshop on Honey Bee Nutrition from 7:00-9:00 pm ...

Re: Robber Screens
Mine have worked well. I lay a strip of wood on top to adjust the size of the opening. I like the aluminum flashing brushy has over the screen below the top entrance, thats a nice idea. I think I will add that to mine. I have purchased one of the brushy robber screens to use as a template to build s...

Robber Screens
Rob, What do your robber screens look like? Anybody else have a design to share? Brushy Mountain has a nice one. http://www.brushymountainbeefarm.com/10-Frame-Moving-and-Robbing-Screen/productinfo/517/ Here is one I have built. http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w45/Beegood_01/Robber%20screen/Robber...

Beekeeper Paul
Got this from the Kelly newsletter. Beekeeper Paul visited a palm reader. Said the mysterious old woman, “For five bucks, I can read your love line and tell your romantic future.” Paul readily agreed and the reader took one look at his open palm and said, “I can see that you have no girlfriend.” “Th...

Re: I think I have wax moth in my hive
Wax moth larvae and SHB larvae look very much alike, the SHB has spines and the wax moth has more legs. There are a couple of pictures in the web site below. http://www.omafra.gov.on.ca/english/food/inspection/bees/shb-reportfindings.htm Anyway, one larva on the sticky board does not mean devastatio...

Re: Adding Bottom Board for Screen Bottom Hives
I have also noticed the past few years that the bees do not fully utilize the bottom of the frames in the bottom box when there is a screened bottom board except for this past season. This past season they filled everything, maybe it was the mild winter or the strong nectar flow. I have heard some b...

Re: when should I start feeding my hives
I would start feeding 2:1 syrup now. They will need approximately 40 pounds of stores to get through the winter. If you have other hives that have frames of stores you can distribute the wealth. The bees will take syrup as long as they are not clustered and the syrup is 50 degrees or above. Bees wil...

Re: Adding Bottom Board for Screen Bottom Hives
Runner963, I also have screened bottom boards and only use the inserts for mite counts and when necessary for treatments. Bees do not keep the entire hive warm, they only keep the cluster warm, so cold temperatures will not kill bees but moisture will. Maintain good ventilation and an adequate wind ...

Re: hive robbing?
I ran across what I thought was a good explanation of robbing. What is robbing? Robbing is a term used to describe honey bees that are invading another hive and stealing the stored honey. The robbing bees rip open capped cells, fill their honey stomachs, and ferry the goods back home. They will figh...

Re: Central Carolina Fair
Thanks Wally. I don’t even think about the masters, I just do stuff that I enjoy doing and the honey competition was fun. Entering the Central Carolina Fair is a good deal. You drop your honey off before the fair starts(free parking) and they give you two tickets that cover entry back into the fair ...

Central Carolina Fair
There weren't very many honey entries at the fair, when I dropped mine off they said there were a lot of entries for honey but most don't show up. One of the workers was nice enough to move my jar of honey over to an end table where I could get a picture. http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w45/Beego...

Re: Swarm
The hives are in the third week of Apiguard, I think I would have absconded before now if I had to live with that stuff. With all of those bees in the air I could not figure out which hive they came from, you think it would have been easy. I will check the hives the next few days and see what I can ...

Swarm
I have not had many swarms in the fall but here is one for this fall. Saw a lot of bees in the air today around 4 PM and saw them starting to gather around a rosemary bush that is about 20 feet in front of about 4 hives. I saw them starting to land on a roasemary bush branch by the time I got the ca...

I was thinking of putting some pollen sub out for the bees but the Yellow Crownbeard seems to be blooming about the same time as 2010 and they are gathering some nice orange pollen from it.

Re: Harvesting
I received the Bluesky ATC Honey Refractometer today and really like the looks of it. It has only one scale, that scale is from 12% to 30% with 5 divisions between each percentage. Correction - there are 10 divisions between each whole percentage. I did a test run and a .2% is clear and easy to read...

Thanks Wally, I would not have taken the free job but one of the 2012 Guilford County students mentioned he really wanted to do a cutout so I accepted the job and then the student was out of town all that week. I was glad my neighbor Joe was happy to pitch in and help. Just trying to pass along what...

Gibsonville cutout
A few weeks ago I received a call that a tree had been cut down that had a honeybee colony. I went over and had them cut the log so we could stand it up. Note the plywood entrance where a branch had been cut off. http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w45/Beegood_01/IMG_1997.jpg This had been put up by ...
