Re: Swarm-4/13/16

I haven't been as busy as Rob or Wally but over the last 4 weeks I have pulled in 3 swarms from trees and one finally moved into my swarm trap.

Re: Podmore

I am just starting to make tincture from propolis. Sounds interesting that you can make it with dead bees.
If you make some let us know how it goes.

Re: Newbie........and so confused!

Should you stop feeding them? Depends. You are putting a second super on so the first super is drawn and filled ? If you have a full super I would stop feeding them. To give us a better idea of what is going on can you provide some info, doesn’t have to be exact just some round numbers. How much dra...

Re: Swarm-4/13/16

I have not seen a swarm or received a swarm call yet. I have just enjoyed reading about the swarm adventures on the forum. My neighbor has had one or two swarms which he hived. As far as I know my bees have not swarmed yet. But I have a swarm trap at an out yard and about 3 days ago there were a cou...

Re: Newbie........and so confused!

I also like the hive top feeders and you need to keep feeding them, but keep an eye on the amount of comb available for the queen to lay eggs in. You don't want the worker bees to fill all of the open cells up with syrup and not have any place for the queen to lay eggs. Sounds like you are off to a ...

Re: Honey Bees In A House

Since removing shingles from the outside is not an option, I guess a cutout from inside the house is also not allowed?

Re: Nectar Flows

The blueberries, peach tree and silver maple are blooming here as well as the red buds.
I am going to wait until after the cold snap to go through the hives again.

Re: Almost Nectar Bound

Wally – I hope your tooth or maybe lack of a tooth is better and you got to check on your hives. I finally got around to checking on the last mine. They were pretty wide spread from almost nectar bound on a couple to no nectar or honey (did have sugar on the top bars remaining) to a couple that are ...

Almost Nectar Bound

Moved an overwintered nuc into a 10 frame hive yesterday Feb29 over in Gibsonville, the nuc had frames of nectar and was getting nectar bound. Checked 3 hives today here at the house and one was almost nectar bound, did not expect to see it this early. I put some drawn frames on the outside of the b...

Mine have not been very excited about the pollen substitute for a few days now, but they have been working two maples on the other side of the subdivision.

Re: Bees Collecting Pollen Sub

OK yesterday was in the 50's and today its in the 60's and maybe only a dozen bees are at the pollen sub I have put out. So, that should mean the red maples are blooming. The maple in my yard is not blooming. But I took a walk around the subdivision before the rain started and sure enough there is a...

Re: Bees Collecting Pollen Sub

I hope that is more accurate then the NCSBA "Whats Blooming " site that shows Mar 5. Edit: Mountain region is March 5 the Piedmont is Feb 1st. Also Weather.com is showing low temperatures to be at or below freezing for the next 11 days. Sounds like we are in the ball park. Just waiting to ...

Re: Bees Collecting Pollen Sub

Thanks for the explanation. Yea its always a weird feeling when that happens. When it does I hope something is blooming but always have to watch the entrances to make sure there is still active traffic and not some disaster. We may have to wait a few more weeks until that meter is only showing a few...
