April 03, 2012 Swarm

Well I did not get to about 4 hives the last couple of weeks to open up the brood nest and a quick check today showed 4 hives with swarm cells, nectar filled brood chambers and this nice swarm. They were about 5 foot off the ground so I set the hive on the ladder shook the branch and in they went. T...

Re: Mite A Way Quick Strips for sale

I didn't see the individual packs but if you only have a few hives the individual packs may be the way to go. $5.00 or $6.oo per strip plus shipping, sounds like beebaby is picking up the shipping so it may be a good deal. I would encourage the newbees to start thinking about mite treatments, or any...

Re: Mite A Way Quick Strips for sale

The bucket I purchased contained 10 packs and there were two strips per pack and you use one pack per hive. Did you purchase a smaller quanity? 10 PACK MiteAway Quick Strip - 10 treatments, 20 strips $48.00 PACK MiteAway Quick Strip - 36 treatments, 72 strips $148.00 http://www.brushymountainbeefarm...

Re: Swarming as Splitting

Depending on how many queen cells there are maybe pull a frame with some queen cells and a couple of frames of honey and pollen shake in some house bees and start a nuc.

Nice pictures thanks for sharing them.

NC State Beekeepers Meeting March 2012 - Notes

NC State Beekeepers Meeting March 9,10 2012 Just a few notes from the state meeting that I thought were interesting. Dr. Tarpy did some testing of Italian queens from a few areas in the United States and found that there are basically only two strains of Italians in the USA. One on the west coast an...

Thanks Wally, I missed it.

So now that makes it more interesting in that she should be grandfathered, but then there are complaints.

Still not worth jail time.

Re: A nice day to pick up sticks

Kurt, Well neither Rob nor I were cutting queen cells. I was planning on doing what Jacobs mentioned and that was to move the queen to a new hive and leave queen cells or eggs so a new queen can be produced. But, you wrote: "There is one way to split if swarm cells are present." Do you hav...

Re: Louisburg NC Beekeeper With Ordinance Trouble

I think we would all agree that 75 feet is overkill and not necessary. But, the lady knew about the ordinance and ignored it, maybe hoping not to get caught. Now I hope she removes her hives or somehow comes into compliance with the ordinance its not worth jail time. With a situation like like this ...

Re: A nice day to pick up sticks

Rob - yes I think I did get the worst of that encounter, especially as far as the hive was concerned. Wally - I had planned to go to the meeting but just did not feel that good. I think I would have sat there and in a daze. I had my wife take some pictures but they came out blurry or very dark. Kurt...

A nice day to pick up sticks

Like go up the ladder and fix a gutter, do a bit of electrical wiring, cut some base board split a hive but instead I was raking and picking up sticks. Why you ask? Well yesterday I went to a guys house t...

I am thinking about pulling a nuc off of at least one hive maybe early next week. See if I can reduce the number in the trees this year.

Herb,
I got a bit confused as to how many boxes you have in total and where the brood is, not just bees, but eggs, larvae and capped brood.

Re: Feeding yet?

Herb, Sounds like a good plan on feeding the syrup. Capped stores - Nectar or syrup that has been curred by the bees and has been capped over. Uncapped stores - nectar or syrup that has NOT been curred by the bees and does NOT have a capping. So you would see a liquid in the cell. There are empty ce...

herbcoop wrote: “top medium is scattered with honey source in the middle 4 frames and lower amount in the outers.” Your capped stores sound minimal and you did not mention uncapped stores so even though we are in or on the edge of a nectar flow depending on the area I think it is a good plan to prov...
