Re: Feeding yet?
I have not had a problem with a robbing frenzy, Yet. But most of my hives have reducers on of some type and if I do have a problem with robbing I can go to the hive top feeders. Robbing may become a larger problem in the future as a couple of new beekeepers are setting up hives that are within a mil...

Re: Feeding yet?
Wally,
Do you think whatever the bees are bringing in at this time is rapidly being used to raise brood and the bees are not storing very much just yet?
No red buds blooming yet just too early for them I guess.
Did find a couple of tulip popular trees with the bud or flowers still on the branches.

Re: Feeding yet?
My blueberries are in bud stage as well but my neighbor told me he has fruit trees in bloom. I have to walk over in the woods to see if the red buds are doing anything. Just to stay on topic I have fed several gallons over the last two months. I have one hive that is 5 mediums high and 3 of the medi...

Option 3.. Stack the supers outside under a roof away from weather but where they will get light and airflow over the combs.

Re: Deadouts
Noticed some wax cappings on a hive landing board the other day and got to take a look today while checking out other hives. The bees on the bottom layer of the cluster had their heads in the cells and there were a few capped cells of drone brood. It was kind of erie as they looked like they were st...

Re: Spring buildup
I was hoping you had mature mating drones.
I have only seen a few drones in the hive and have not seen any flying yet. Must be a week or so behind.

Quote from Rob's post:
"This is the first time this season that I have seen mature drones successfully take off, fly, and return to the hives."
Ski's question:
Just curious how you knew they were mature drones?

Re: Plants
Karen Neil of the Guilford County Ag Extension Office presented a list of plants at the January meeting that bees can forage listed by season in North Carolina. The web site below provides a list by perennials, annuals, herbs, trees and shrubs and vines. www.protectpollinators.org Not sure I got all...

Re: Fly parasite
Dr. Tarpy from NCSU spoke a bit about this last night in the question and answer session of the webnair "Coming Out OF Winter". His remarks were along the lines of: We have heard of this fly before but we don't even know if its in North Carolina, its not at the top of the list of things to...

Re: Triad Bee Supply on the news
Zulu,
Thanks for the heads up.
I didn't see it on last nights news at 10:00 but caught it this morning on the news at 9:00.
I agree it was well done.
I did not know they were making their own boxes.

GCBA Bee school Ad
It was nice to see John Pledger from Triad Bee Supply on TV yesterday and then the advertisement for the Guilford County Bee Keepers beekeeping classes. Nicely done John.

Re: Plants
Nice site Zulu, great pictures.
The invasive part may be when the birds eat the berries and then deposit them else where, so new plants may be widely dispersed and not necessarily next to the host plant.

Plants
Rob, This can be a start of some plants to catalog. Someone dropped off this bush the other day, is has a lemon type of smell and about a day after it was dropped off the bees were having their way with it. I was told it was a Mimosa but it does not seem to fit anything I can find in the mimosa fami...

Re: Jan 2010 Bee Culture Nosema Disease
For those that do not get or have time to read the bee magazines I thought I would list a few points that I thought were interesting in an article by Randy Oliver on Nosema in the January 2012 issue of the American Bee Journal. Sick Bees part 15 American Bee Journal January 2012 Sick Bees by Randy O...

Bee stuff on Craigslist
Found this on Craigslist:
12 Bee Hives with extras - $200 (Liberty)
I have a dozen old hives needing a good cleaning. all in pretty good shape. Also have new wax inserts. And maybe a few other goodies I can throw in.
