Kirt Webster has a unique table in that you can tip the table and lay the hive on it. I am not sure I would ever get used to doing that. But a nice feature for folks with failing backs.

moving screens with 4 holes.
An interesting idea for moving screens that I don't recall ever seeing. The lower section of the screen has four holes in it to let the bees in and since it is slanted inward the theory is the bees will not find there way back out. http://www.beesource.com/forums/showthread.php?263123-making-moving-...

Small Hive Beetle IPM
Found this link on another forum. Small Hive Beetle IPM By Dr. Hood. http://www.clemson.edu/psapublishing/Pages/Entom/EB160.pdf I have only scanned this but looks like its some good basic information. I have heard Dr. Hood speak at a couple of State Beekeeper meetings, he was comparing the "Hoo...

Quote from the Solstice thread: "For best buildup and strong hives, many keepers begin feeding both sugar water and pollen substitute shortly after Solstice. By mid Jan. at the latest, for maximum effectiveness." I fed pollen patties my 3rd year of beekeeping and had a hard time keeping up...

Re: December 30, 2011 and bees are flying
I also noticed the bees flying today, snapped a picture of a few bees in the chicken feed. There was a bucket of pollen sub about 50 feet away with a few hundred bees, I guess the bees in the chicken feed didn't get the memo.

Rob,
It was not clear to me if you were able to answer your queston.
"I want to see if the most enthusiastic hive for sugar water is the one most in need of stores or if they just like cooler weather."

Dec 5th 2011 pollen sub being collected
Put some Pollen sub out last week and there were a few foragers out collecting today around 4 PM. They had already carried off about half of what I had put in the bucket. http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w45/Beegood_01/PollensubDec5th2011003.jpg http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w45/Beegood_01/Po...

Re: MiteAway Quick Strips
Oct 15, 2011 I put the MAQS in my hives on Sept 28. The daytime high temps were low 80's for a few days and then a few days with high 60's. I was able to get into 3 hives today and found a good population of bees with a lot of small to mid size larvae, eggs in one hive and capped brood. The strips w...

I picked up a good sized head cold and will not be able to make it to the meeting tonight Oct 11. It sounds like it will be a very informative meeting. What have you done lately?
Had a few opportunities to gather some public credits the last month or so. Since I hit the 60 year marker I am slowing down a lot and just doing events I think may be fun. Participated in the first Honey Day at the Company Shops market in Burlington it was organized by a few beekeepers and not an A...
