Re: Nectar Flows
The supers I put on the hives late February early March are full of nectar and are being capped. The supers I added April 20 have some nectar but are not close to being full.

Swarm April 17, 2017
Had this swarm issue from one of my home hives about an hour before a rain shower came through. I put the medium hive boxes in place and shook the tree just as it was starting to rain. Looks like they settled in for now. http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w45/Beegood_01/IMG_3560_zpsdhmuyqcn.jpg http...

Re: Supering for the honey flow
Yes, I have also been smelling a sweet smell around the hives with a lot of foragers as well as fanning just inside the entrance.
Planning on a visit tomorrow to see whats going on inside more supers needed, swarm cells?
I don't think the tulip poplar is even blooming yet.

Re: Bees and Mosquito treatment
I have not dealt with commercial spraying for mosquitoes. But if the guy says its bee friendly it may very well bee bee friendly. I guess you could always ask what they are spraying and research the chemical. If it were my hives I would find out what day he is coming and close up all entrances the n...

Re: Bees Making Entrances
I have an old box where there are about 3 places around the box that the bees have been using as entrances for the past 2 seasons. I was going to replace the box but as time went on I have noticed that the bees are using these openings as entrances and are rarely using the bottom board entrance. I n...

Re: NCSBA 2016 State Fair Honey Booth
I understand the link above is for signing up to sell honey. A few years back there was a sign up sheet for the booth on the other side of the Bee cage for just talking to people about bees. Oct 20, 2016 I talked with Nancy Rupert and she said that there is a sign up sheet for the bee education boot...

Does anyone know if the beekeeping booth needs to be manned and if there is a schedule?

I was removing MAQS pads from some hives today as well as checking for stores and brood. I have not noticed it in the past but there wee mites, dead ones, on the MAQS. Just thought it was a bit strange. http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w45/Beegood_01/IMG_3542_zpsfbjadjl0.jpg http://i173.photobucke...

Solar Wax Melter
I built a solar wax melter in April of 2010. http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w45/Beegood_01/wax%20April%202010/Waxapril2010009.jpg http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w45/Beegood_01/wax%20April%202010/Waxapril2010006.jpg It lived under a hickory nut tree for 5 years and the wood was getting rotten...

Re: Prescription required for certain bee related drugs
If I am reading it correctly it will only apply to antibiotics like we use for AFB and Nosema and not to anything we buy for mite treatments. I guess if your bees get sick you can put about a half a cup (300 bees), that should be a good sample, in a box go to your vets off and ask for a prescription...

Re: Dark honey
My honey was darker this year as well. I don't separate light looking frames from dark, they all get extracted and for the most part are all mixed together. My neighbor said it was sweeter then last year. Last year he said my honey was not as sweet as honey he got from the Florida orange grove region.

Re: How much can a hive produce?
Congrats on the honey haul!
I think the best I have ever done is between 3 and 4 supers from one hive.
Hope your good fortune continues for years to come.

Rob,
I am aware that Zombie bees has been posted before but this video has one of Guilford County Beekeeper Associations most respected beekeepers making some comments. Always nice to see a club member on TV.

Keep An Eye On The Butterfly.
Over the past several years 99% of the swarms from my hives have landed in a small peach tree in front of the hives. They were 4-5 feet off the ground and easy to shake into a hive. This year there have not been many swarms in the peach tree. Not sure where they have gone or if my checker boarding h...

Stop Robbing Almost Immediately?
I saw this on Beesource and wondered if anyone has tried it. I suspect it might work if the robbing is just getting started. From Beesource post: Greetings, I hate robbing. This has worked for me the two times I have tried it, one being today. First, put on an entrance reducer using the tiny entranc...

Re: Supering for the honey flow
I am seeing foragers going out but also see more bees hanging around line dancing. I put shallow supers on at least 3 weeks ago with some of them being just thin surplus foundation. A quick check today showed that not only have they not drawn out any of the shallows but they are steeling wax. Maybe ...
