I am going to have to head into work but if you want to pm me your address I would be happy to come out and have a look after work. I don't have the equipment or expertise to do cut outs or trap outs as you can see by the earlier postings, but I would be willing to scout the situation and see what i...

You may want to pm Wally to see what equipment he has. This is the busiest time of year for the beekeeping woodenware suppliers and a lot of the hive parts are on back order for a week or two. Wally is in Randleman. He also has a wealth of knowledge he is willing to share. Many of us have some knowl...

Sandwich/hinged frames-Wanted to Buy
I would like to buy around 10 of the sandwich frames to replace Wally's that we used when we took comb out of the tree cutout this week. If anyone has these for sale or knows who does sell them, please either respond on the forum board or pm me. Thanks. Rob

As of 11:30 p.m. Saturday night, they are still here. I brought a deep to the cutout, which was not enough to hold the bees. I bought another deep and frames from Wally while I was there. When I got home I gave them a pollen patty, a medium super with a few frames of honey, a few drawn frames and so...

Everyone I know around here has had loads of them for the last two years. They seem to have exploded in population after the drought year. I'm constantly dumping them out of my inner covers and out of the deep I have out as a swarm lure. I sure wish I could find a market for them because I could jus...

Wally led a group of the inexperienced through the tear down of the tree and placing of comb in the frame and hives without the loss of any fingers or toes. We all learned a lot and had a great time. I'm sorry you missed Wally spotting the queen among tens of thousands of bees and gently herding her...

My best estimate is get there at noon and begin shortly thereafter. Wally said the temperature should be 60 or above when we do it and from the National Weather Service hourly graphs, it looks like that will happen just after noon and will be above 60 for about 5 hours. It will probably take me that...

Drones
Today, April 17, 2009, is the first day I have seen significant numbers of drones at my two hives. These hives were treated with formic acid for varroa mites at the time of the State meeting. Given that the temperatures then were around 80 degrees and just short of removal temperatures, I am certain...

I think Wally was giving you the answer for undrawn foundation. If you have drawn comb and are looking to super up for the flow I would think you could put the super on now as long as it was not brood comb before or you have enough bees or other wax moth precautions to prevent comb damage if the bee...

And now, the rest of the story. Last weekend Marc and I went through the combined hive and it was an ugly sight. It was queenless and had dwindled to about 1 frame of very lethargic bees. When there was a large population of queenless bees, they pooped up the frames quite a bit, but I am pretty sure...

Drones
Yesterday, March 22, 2009, I saw drones flying at David Lancaster's hive. It is located at the eastern edge of Greensboro. I saw dark drones and a few golden colored drones. I have not seen any drones from my hives in Greensboro proper.

I am anxious to see what is going on with the combined hive. This Thursday will be the 21st day of my Formic Acid mite treatment of my 3 hives. They have been sealed up to create a fumigation chamber for the treatment so that I cannot go exploring. The other 2 hives are bringing in pollen in a stead...

Michael Bush advises using all mediums for ease and uniformity, but most people in this area use 1 deep and 1 medium for brood and then additional medium supers for extra brood space or honey. More boxes are better. If you are starting out with nucs (5 drawn deep frames of bees, brood, honey and pol...

If there is no evidence of any other problem I would freeze the frames for 2 days, then store them in a way that wax moths cannot attack them again (bagged and tied is an option) or get BT from Wally if he has it and spray and store the frames. A strong hive should be able to remove the silk and rep...

A further update of a puzzling situation. I went into the combined hive this afternoon. The upper medium super that had the queen and a few hundred attendents now has bees covering 5 frames. There was capped brood and larvae on at least one of the frames. The newspaper between this medium and the on...

I'll take a stab at this and hope others will feel free to join in. If you can start with 2 hives rather than 1 you will be in better shape. If you lose 1, and many do, you still have 1, and 2 hives give you more options for dealing with problems that may arise. If you are starting with nucs, you sh...

Just a quick update. I am somewhat hopeful. It looked like the foragers were bringing significantly more pollen into the combined hive yesterday than they had been bringing in for the past few days. I am hoping this is not just pollen needed to finish feeding the remaining larvae, but signals that t...
