Re: Dead and Dying Bees in front of the hive
I would not think robbing. Two months ago, when they were splits, the main flow was nearing its end. The new queens may have layed out the box thinking the flow was good, and all that was brought in, went to feed those bees and maintain the colony. Once they got the brood capped, the flow had slowed...

Swarm in Caswell County (Yanceyville area)
I got a call this evening about 7 PM about a swarm hanging in a small tree, 6 ft. off the ground. The swarm in north of Yanceyville NC, (about 1 hr from Greensboro). If anyone is interested in this swarm, or if you know of anyone that lives in that area with bees that may want it, call me at 207-345...

Re: Local Feeding Schedule
Good point Wally. When I was refering to "showing stores" I was refering to capped honey/syrup, and not open nectar that is being used or cured. I just did not mention that it should be capped.

Re: Local Feeding Schedule
What did you start with? Package, Nuc, Established Hive? If you feed them until they have all pulled comb on all frames, and start showing stores in the upper portions of the hive, and some stores on the brood frames, then you should be good to stop feeding. I have heard of feeding until they get ho...

Price range for honey
Just wondering what the price range is for honey in Greensboro Area? 1/2 Lb. Extracted (classic glass jar) ?? 1 Lb. Extracted (classic glass jar) ?? Pint of Cut Comb (standard mason jar) ?? Quart of Cut Comb (standard mason jar) ?? The honey I harvested this year was a light amber, and was most like...

Re: 2012 Harvest
I had all capped in what I took. I had three medium boxes that I left. One fully capped, but had brood in the bottom of the frames on about 9 of 10. Two that came off of a mistake hive. I opened up the brood nest too much, and ended up with a two queen hive, that swarmed two or three times, and they...

Re: Bees not cleaning up cappings
Sourwood trees are blooming, but I have always heard that sourwood in this area was not a significant flow? Other than gardens, and clover, I can't think of anything else that is blooming.

Re: super empty
You may have to look real close as well. I had one that was broodless and eggless two weeks ago, and I almost wrote them off as being queenless until I found a small area of eggs about the size of a tablespoon. Some eggs were on the side of the cells, and others were in the bottom. I went in the oth...

2012 Harvest
Well, despite all the swarms, I harvested honey today. I ended up with three extracting supers, and one cut comb shallow. I did notice alot of bridge comb this year, has anyone else noticed that in their hives? I also had brood in one medium that was not expected, and two that were not capped. That ...

Hive on a set of scales
Has anyone ever set a hive on a large scale to monitor the honey flow? I was wondering if there was a time lapsed video on-line anywhere that showed this progress?
I think that would be neat. The only time I was ever at Brushy Mtn. I recall them having a hive on a scale.

Re: Equipment Storage Question
Thanks Wally. I had not even thought about the wax question. I have had some wax that went bad hanging in frames. So I will put together 20 frames to fill all my nucs, and get them wired, and wax them as needed.

Re: caught first swarm
I would think that after five days she would be laying, however, if it was a virgin queen and swarm, then she may not be yet. If she was a virgin queen and is laying, at only five days from when you caught them, it could be a small area. I would give her another week.

two questions
1. Has anyone in the area used the English Garden Tops from Brushy Mtn? and Have you had any issue with ants getting in the void space and colonizing? (I have two, and it appears that ants have made a home in the top, so I am going to replace them with a standard telescoping cover.) 2. With this yea...

Re: Equipment Storage Question
It is cheaper, and I am going to start pulling and replacing frames next year. I hope to pull a few five frame splits out next year as a means to reduce swarming. I have had a tremendous year of swarming. I know of at least 8 swarms from my four hives (only three of which I feel have swarmed). I los...

Equipment Storage Question
I have read that when you buy a bulk of new woodenware, that you should assemble it as soon as you can to reduce cracking, warping, and poor fit on the joints. Is this also true with Frames? I purchased a bulk of 100 frames the other day, and this is the most I have ever had on hand. I usually just ...
