Re: When are you throwing on honey supers?

I'm smelling the nectar curing in my hives also. Holly trees are a favorite of my bees, so I'm going to put on supers tomorrow.

Re: Wayne's Bees

The Wayne's Bees hive survived the winter. I did an inspection last Wednesday and had bees in all four boxes. Didn't see any queens cells but I only pulled a couple frames. Added a medium of frames with empty drawn comb to the top and started feeding sugar water. We'll see what happens...

Here's another article on the Flow Hive:

Check out the video near the bottom of the article. The design seems quite brilliant, I just wonder how it will work in practice.

My one remaining hive of Wayne's Bees survived. But at least another week of cold weather ahead.

I'll be amazed if my one remaining hive survives this cold spell. I expect I'll be going into spring without a hive.

Re: Sad Day

Sorry to hear that Herb. Last year I lost 3 of 4 hives, and so far 1 of 2 this winter. Just posted about my hive of Wayne's Bees, which is hanging on but we still have another month of winter to go.

Re: Wayne's Bees

Haven't posted in a while but I'm still keeping bees (just barely.) Had two hives going into winter, a two year old hive of Wayne's Bees and a new hive of Carnis, both from Larry Tate. The Carnis looked good in Oct but didn't survive the first cold spell in November. I'm surprised that the Wayne's h...

Re: Drones

I watched my sole remaining hive for about 20 minutes this afternoon. Heavy foraging, bringing in lots of pollen, and making lots of visits to the water pans, but didn't see a single drone.

Re: Winter Planning--First Thoughts

Fortunately, I started my week off on Wednesday. Checked on the bees again about 315 and they are still foraging heavily. Almost all of the pollen they are bringing in now is light green. Not sure what that is.

Re: Winter Planning--First Thoughts

Just checked my two remaining hives this morning at 1130. The temp was 47 and the Wayne's Bees hive was foraging heavily, bringing in a lot of bright yellow pollen, probably camellia. Tipped the hive earlier in the morning and it still seemed pretty heavy. Unfortunately, my last hive of Carniolans a...

Re: Winter Planning--First Thoughts

Lost one of my 3 hives during the most recent cold snap. All 3 hives seemed to be doing well during the last warm spell a couple weeks ago. The dead hive is a 2nd year Carniolan. The bees didn't starve. I pulled from the hive 2 medium 8 frame boxes weighing 39 and 40 lbs apiece yesterday. Mite count...

Re: Black comb

It's surprising how quickly the comb darkens. I got my first packages April of 2012. I spotted some empty brood comb today that looked like it had been painted with flat black paint. Amazing.

Re: Really cold weather

I didn't have to combine hives and kill a bad queen because my bees did it for me. In September they robbed out a split I had made back in June. That left my three remaining hives fat and happy going into winter. I also fed heavily between July and early October. All three were foraging heavily yest...

Re: Wayne's bees

I got a package of Wayne's Bees from Larry in April this past spring. Because it was a 1st year hive I didn't take any honey this year but the hive is doing great going into winter. Heavy with stores and a very low mite count. I might raise some queens from this hive using the Cloake board method in...

Re: Dead Bees

Camellias in my neighborhood bloomed into late winter last year. Camellia pollen is usually bright yellow, pretty distinctive this time of year. My bees are bringing in some, but not as much as last year.
