I've been wanting to grow tea, who knew the bees like it too! Thanks for the local source for tea plants.

Re: Missing a class??
Nick, the study guide is under the "Just Stuff" section. I'm not an administrator of the classes, just someone who took them last year, so I can't address your ability to take the test. I took it last year and found the study guide to be very helpful, as well as the "Beekeeping for Du...

Re: Local Feeding Schedule
Thanks for your input guys, books are wonderful, but other people's experiences are a little more "local" and relevant. BTW Ron, I have two new packages of bees that we started in the middle of April (local bees, so a little bit later than the GA ones). They have done beautifully and I''m ...

Local Feeding Schedule
I'm in my first year of having bees, things are going well. However, given it is my first year, and materials I read are written by people from all across the country, I'd like a little local insight. I understand the idea of having new bees and feeding them until they stop taking the sugar water (c...

Re: Dead bees
Ok. It was just the first time I had seen them like that, and for both hives to do it on the same day too.
Thanks,

Dead bees
So this morning when I went to check the girls (I do it every morning and afternoon-what can I say, I love my bees) both hives had dead bees on the doorstep. Just a result of a really chilly night? I'm not wigging out or anything, but thought perhaps some of you who have more experience than me-not ...

OPTIONS FOR VARROA MITE CONTROL
I emailed Nancy Ruppert, who spoke at the Guilford Beekeepers meeting Tuesday night about the handout she spoke about that lists the different treatments for Varroa control, and she very kindly sent it to me. I would love to upload it and share it with anyone else who is interested, but every file f...

Re: Robbers?
Mine had the same thing happen, no entrance reducer, but it looked kind of strange to this newbee. Glad someone else saw the same thing, I don't feel so crazy for wondering.

Re: Local bee group on Facebook
Well, since I am already on Facebook daily, it makes sense to me. I would still bring my "issues" to this forum, as I check it daily, but as Rick says, the younger folks are Tweeting, Facebooking etc... all day long, and it might be a good way to attract some of them to beekeeping. I can a...

Re: Hive Management Question
For me, as a newbee, this brings up the question of what to do next spring if I have a hive with lots of bees that looks like it might swarm. I have two hives and don't really plan to have more, so splits are not the answer. I have the bees because I want them to pollinate my garden, not so much for...

Re: Bee chasing
I checked in both hives today and both had eggs and larvae, so I don't have a problem with queenlessness. The bees were fine, not stinging (no bumping!) I must have just had a radical bee who was irritated by the cool weather or something.

Bee chasing
So I was minding my own business, putting plants in my garden, twenty or more yards from the hives, when suddenly there is a buzzing around my head. I often have large flies that buzz loudly so I just tried to brush it off and get it to go its merry way, but it kept pursuing me, even when I stood up...

Checking for queen release
I **finally** got my first bees on Thursday, and installed them without any trouble, but now come the question of when to check to see if they have released the queen. I have conflicting info about the first inspection, anywhere from four days to two weeks, so I thought I'd check that opinions here ...

Re: Water Supply
Thanks, I remember you mentioning something like this during class, but I couldn't remember the exact set up. The picture is really helpful. How many jars for two hives? I'll change it out every morning. The good news is that I have one already because we have chicks, and they will outgrow it by the...

Water Supply
I will be receiving my first bees in a few weeks, and as I am getting set up I have a question about water supply. My neighbor has a pool, so I know I need to be very careful to keep the bees supplied with water so as to keep them out of the pool-we're good friends with the neighbors and I'd like to...
