Robbing or Swarm?

Yesterday I noticed what I thought was a robbibg event on my hive. Bees frantically flying everywhere and hundreds of small bees on the ground in clumps .I thought my bees were attacking the robbers. I placed a robbing screen on the front of the hive immediately. This morning I inspected the hive an...

Association Dues

What are the dues for this year per person? Is it 5$ or $10 dollars per person? Did they go up this year?

Dead Bees

When I look up from the bottom of the hive I see 30-40 dead bees laying on the screen and I see a few on the ground. This is more than I'm accustom to seeing. The hive is strong, full of bees, the mite count is very low, SHB are present but less than 20 or so I counted last week. So I don't see a da...

Robber Bee Screen

I purchased a robber bee screen from Brushy Mountain and put it in place yesterday. The top (secret) hole is open. Should I open the larger hole at the bottom from time to time? The bees seem disoriented due to the new screen. I suppose they will figure this out soon enough. Will robber bees figure ...

Questions fron a new bekeeper.

Ok, I opened up the hive today to see how hings are going. Here is what I found. I have 4 - med, 8 frame boxes. The lowest, 1st box, is about 60-70% full. There are 3 frames that have either been cleaned out or were not used. This has been consitant from the first month ofthe spring season. A few ce...

Re: Top Feeding?

OK, thanks. Do you know of a less expensive place to buy sugar than Costco?

Re: Top Feeding?

Thanks for confirmation. I have heard some say go ahead and start 2 to 1 sugar to water and the bees will start capping the honey. What are your thoughts?

Re: Top Feeding?

Ok, I placed about 1 1/2 gallons of 1 to 1 sugar water on the hive and it was gone in 24 hours. Looks like they are thirsty indeed. Is this typical for this time of year? I have 4 medium 8 frame supers.

Top Feeding?

I'm from Greensboro and this is my first season with bees. I've noticed my bees are coming back to the hive with much less nector than before. Is it time to start feeding them sugar water again? If so, will 1/1 ratio work for now. Or, do you recommend going to 2/1 ratio? Also, the new top feeder I p...

Re: Beekeeping 101

Hey, thanks for your insights. I brought 2 frames up from the brood box to help start the second super. So, I'm pretty sure there is brood in the second. But I'll work my way down into the second to verify. If I see no brood I'll take a couple of frames and harvest them. Is there a simple way to har...

Beekeeping 101

I'm a new beekeeper. So I'm a bit unsure of what is happening in my hive. I'm using 8 frame mediums supers. I purchased our bees through the association this spring. The second super is now filled to capacity and the third super is just now starting to populate well after sitting there for 2-3 weeks...
