Re: robbing
Thank you very much for the video it was very helpful. At this point, even after last inspection I am not sure what happened. Since I do not see my hives every day and I try to keep my posts as short as possible, I will not try to post what I think happened as it would be very long. Do you (or any o...

supering
Is there a time of year that you should consider not adding a super because it is getting too late in the season or would the potential for overcrowded conditions dictate adding a super? Thanks

Re: Nectar Flow
I was wondering if the flow had even begun yet. Obviously some have seen the flow start and then stop. Typically in northern piedmont when does the flow start and how long does it last?

swarm cells/queen cups
At my last hive inspection I noticed what I thought was queen cups and possibly swarm cells. Should they be removed during inspections or not? Also, if they are not removed what are the implications? Thanks.

queen excluder
I have two new hives that were started this year with 3 lb packages. My question is should I use a queen excluder or not. I would appreciate any comments about the subject. Both hives appear to be doing well, but I am new to beekeeping this year.

Re: hive top feeder filling frequency
If they have drawn out to frame 5/6, do I wait until they are basically full to add super or just if they have started on them? Also, should I move some frames from bottom super to top super and if that is recommended, which frames do you move to the top? Thanks again this info is very useful!

Re: hive top feeder filling frequency
When I checked for queen release on day 4 the 1/2 gallon that I put in during install was gone from both hives. At that time I then added 1 gallon to both. I was planning to go into hives this weekend which will be day 15/16, but was wondering last weekend if I should have checked feeder and added s...

diatomaceous earth
Anyone have any experience with using diatomaceous earth around honey bees? I know you shouldn't put it on them or in hive but was wondering about using it around the house/garden near hives. Thanks.

hive top feeder filling frequency
I want to make sure that I keep feed on my new hives and was wondering if lifting the lid just enough on the back side to check if it was empty (and then adding some syrup if needed) would be too much of an interruption to the hive? If that is not a problem, then how often could one do that check? I...

Re: eggs in burr comb
Thank you very much - I was concerned that maybe I had been a little overzealous with the spray. I did put in the last frame and pushed them all together. I guess they will adjust to that now. Thanks again.

I originally wanted to start with some Waynes bees but inquired too late to get some. I was curious what the queen looked like? Light or dark, etc?

Re: eggs in burr comb
Thank you for the info. Also, when in my hives I saw one bee with a mite attached. I also saw bees seemingly "stuck" together and were literally strung from one frame to another (between the two frames where the queen cage was hanging). I thought this might be from possibly over spraying w...

Re: scales under hive
Yes, wax scales under the hive. It must be that they are occasionally dropping them as they are drawing out the comb. Thanks, I could not remember that one.

eggs in burr comb
I checked for queen release yesterday and removed burr comb from both hives (I have two new hives) after confirmation of release. Upon examination of burr comb I saw eggs in virtually 100% from one hive and approx. 70% in the other. Is the 70% number something to be concerned with?

I seem to remember from class that the white scales under the hive is not a problem. Is my memory correct and what it is the cause?

feed question
I made some syrup 12 days ago in anticipation of new packages last week. Packages were delayed until today. I have kept the feed in the fridge and am wondering if it would still be usable for todays install and should I bring to ambient temperature b4 putting in hive top feeder.
Thanks.
Thanks.
