I'm a little late on responding but for what it's worth here's our 2 cents. Taeler's hive was being over run with those little nasties and we would smash every one of them we could catch (which takes some doing!). Finally did lots of reading and decided to try making a trap out of a plastic sandwich...

I think we may be moving them at night from now on with screens in place well in advance of the move! We just for some stupid reason we had a complete brain freeze when trying to remember how to do all this stuff! Somehow it never occurred to any of us to move the bees at night  As usual we're...

Oh yeah, Wally the kids did block the entrance.... with a fist full of grass which Caleb's bees knocked right back out of there in no time flat! They said they will do just what you said next time they have to move bees this late in the year though. Taeler says there ain't no way to run that fast, t...

well, I really stink at measurements!!! the bees used to live in a slightly lower area of the land at the base of a bunch of trees.... we moved them about 25 yards to the west and another 150 or so yards to the northwest from there. those are hubby's guesstimates since I really am terrible with that...

Oh boy did we make them bees MAD!!

Now that the days are shorter and the shadows seem longer none of the hives were getting much of any sun at all during the day. The bees seemed really cranky and they weren't showing much activity at all either. Being newbies we were concerned that maybe they were trying to take a winter break a lit...

Sorry, I forgot about pictures! http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x54/mamabeek/tiny%20swarm/100_0436.jpg I can't believe she saw that and thought swarm, I would have thought (and did) that it was just a big pinecone! http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x54/mamabeek/tiny%20swarm/100_0439.jpg the kids...

a little swarm

The kids were walking out by the garden the day before yesterday while I weeded. All of a sudden Taeler comes running up to me and says there is a swarm in a tree.... I thought she was pulling my leg since it's so darned late in the year but sure enough there was a soft ball size clump of bees in th...

Well, y'all are doing an awesome job of it then because there just doesn't appear to be hardly any mites in those hives. Taeler's hive is the only one that we ever saw more than one or two mites in but now even her hive is mitey scarce on mites!

Mites?

We used to occasionally see a mite or two in the bee hives but the last two times we've gotten into the hives we have looked and looked and haven't seen any. I'm certainly not complaining but I would love to be able to figure out what we've done that helped out the bees!! We haven't treated with any...

How far apart should they bee?

We decided to move them to a spot that gets just a little bit more sun but also gets shade during the late afternoon and evening. The old spot was only getting bright sun during the middle few hours of the day and Caleb's bees were just getting crankier and crankier. Mr. Wayne was telling us that hi...

Totally amazed!

We got 3 more frames of the purple honey yesterday!!! All three of the kids hives look fantastic right now. The kids were feeling kind of inspired by the offer of $20 on the only jar of the purple honey that they have sold and asked me if I would post a jar on another message board that I'm on... (a...

Wow, that's such a generous offer Kurt! We would be more than happy to return it to you when we're finished reading it. Good books are like treasures to us. We would also like to read a book that our friend Jessica told us about called Robbing the Bees . She says it's a great book, not so much a how...

Thanks for such a great compliment L&H, but I truly don't deserve kids like this! They are truly a blessing to us both and we only hope to raise them to honor the Lord in all that they do. Caleb can't wait to hear how Tristan likes the purple honey. WALLY!!! The kids gave you the wrong jar!!! Yo...

Books

Since me and the kids all love to read and books on our latest favorite topic (bees& honey) are heavy on our school list this year I wondered if y'all would mind sharing your favorite reading on those topics. A lady at the meeting the other night mentioned a book called " The Queen Must Die...

No problem Kurt, it was so much fun for the kids to share with everyone the results of the first honey they harvested! They just loved to hear so many people talk about how they have never seen/heard of purple honey and to say how good it tasted too. The sample jars were jars that they had set out t...
