How much can a hive produce?

In my third year of keeping, but have been pleasantly surprised by one hive. I started a hive last spring with a nuc from Pfafftown, NC. Lost a queen, re-queened, then made just a little honey, but must have been enough, as they survived the winter. They hit the ground running at first sign of sprin...

Re: Honey is thick and grainy

Had a couple theories from others. I am told it could be from pollen gathered from Canola (rapeseed), or from sunflowers. I am not aware of Canola being grown around Stokes County (does anyone know?) and I know there are sunflowers, but have not seen any large fields nearby. Regardless, this stuff i...

Honey is thick and grainy

I pulled a super this past weekend. For some reason it was different than any before. This was very thick, although lighter in color, so thick it will not strain. Also, after several days and a little thru the strainer, the honey is very grainy, almost like crystallized sugar. It is a bit cloudy as ...

Re: Chemical Kill

There is another hive next to it, but it was put in after the dead bees were found, so no effect on the new one.

Wally, I am out of town this week, but will call you this weekend of that is okay. Thanks

Re: Chemical Kill

I have had the same thing happen. I guess I did not respond quickly enough, and when I went into the hive Saturday, there weren't 100 bees in it. Had to be some type of chemical.

Anyone got packages of bees available now?

Some kind of bug

I lifted the hood Saturday on a strong hive, and under the top was some kind of creature. There were probably 20 of them, about 1/4" to 3/8" long, very narrow (thickness of a pencil lead at most). The immediately hid in the cracks between the top and side pieces of the top, so I could not ...

First Honey for me!

I am excited about this, so if I am wrong in what I have done, go easy on me! After attending the classes earlier this year, I got hung up and was really late starting, so I only went with one hive to start. I got set up with a hive from a gentleman in Germanton in May, and got a NUC from a gentlema...

Re: New to the hobby and the class

Can someone give us the remaining dates for the beginner beekeeping class please? I am assuming we will meet, Feb. 6, 13, 20 and 27. Really need to confirm the 27th, as I have another event tentatively scheduled for that night, and need to know whether to decline. Thanks

New to the hobby and the class

Hey guys. I just joined the forum, and went to the first session of the Beginner's class last night. I really enjoyed it and am excited about the rest of the class. I am from Stokes County, but we have no association there, so it worked out to attend this one since I work in Greensboro. I look forwa...
