Large Hive...No Honey!

Could someone give some tips on making a split. I have a couple of hives that have great number of bee's but very little production. My fear is the same as the previous posting, that being all stores will be consumed before winter arrives. Should I move one? two? frames of brood with eggs and one? t...

Have you placed a spacer underneath the rear side of the top so as to enable more ventilation? Not at all unusual to have bees on the outside face of the hive body this time of the year. Daytime temps get the best of them.

Swarms

Kurt,
I came through the winter with 11 of 11 hives and all fairly strong. I am keeping an eye on all my hives as I have not gone in and inspected for queen cells. I have added supers and hope this keeps the swarms down.

Honey Supers

Is anyone contemplating adding on honey supers anytime soon? Start of the poplar bloom will be most likely around April 25th. Hopefully we don't have a late spring freeze and wipe out that source as occurred in 07.

I have found that a mist bottle containing cool water also works great to persuade the workers to go inside.

Sugar water prep temp

Just wondering if anyone has experienced any downside to diluting with hot tap water rather than bringing to a boil on the stove?

Ron, I have only tried one but it turned out to be one of my strongest hives. By early spring of 08 it was stacked 3 high. The original colony come from a cutout near A & T college around early September 07 and was a very young colony. Very little wax comb and very little honey. The queen laid a...

Wally, how's it goin? I've been keeping a low profile this summer. Hope all is well with you and your family. George and I are going to take his grandson tomorrow morning and let him take the lead on this extraction. I checked it out today and it can be worked from the ground with no problem. A grea...

Hello, Kurt Bower called me about these bees on the day the limb fell. I have been working with Rebecca Fagg and the city forestry manager as well as being in contact with the county who is responsible for the property at the school. I plan on utilizing a cherry picker to either cut the snag and low...

Yes, yellow clover grows to about 3 to 5 feet high and is covered with plumes full of nectar and pollen. This is the major source of nectar in the midwest and is where most of the commercially produced clover honey in stores is derived from. The white blooming clover you see around this area is usua...

Swarm in West Greensboro

There is a swarm located in a Crepe (sp) Myrtle tree near Gallimore Dairy Road. Estimated 3 lbs. Contact number is Select Trucks @ 851-1600. All employees are familiar and they desire to have them removed for safety reasons and the public. I have no time available right now.
Thanks, John

Ron, Is the tree a managable size? If so, think about relocation of the colony area of the tree to your bee yard and then proceed with a mall, wedge and possibly a chain saw. This way you can salvage the genetics. I have a tree in my bee yard right now that I am waiting for a cool day to begin work ...

I called on the one in Alamance county and the homeowner has not given the tree surgeon the go ahead to take the tree down. I can't afford the gas to go look at a maybe. He says the bees are in the trunk area 15 feet up and 4 feet in diameter. Too close to the house next door to drop on the ground w...

Electric Wax Embedder

Wally,
I just started using my electric wax embedder and only got 30 or so embedded and then it quit heating the wire. Should I go to Walter T. Kelly or contact Dadant who I purchased it through? I hope this is not the norm as this was a costly purchase.
