The main flow around here starts approximately April 15. Occasionally you can catch some early nectar from things like blackberry and clover. Most people don't worry about the flow until May 1 when the Poplars are in bloom. I would rather be safe and have my supers on a little early. Who knows, you ...

Good stuff.
It is amazing to know that we are continuall learning about bees and that we still do not have it all right.
That is what makes beekeeping so much fun. It is just like a puzzle... once you think you know where all the pieces are, someone comes and moves the pieces.

Thanks for the well wishes.
I hope it turns off cold so the girls don't consume too many stores.

Merry Christmas! :)

I am unsure what epi-pen certification really is.
Anyone can get an epi-pen simply by going to their doctor and getting a prescription.

So if the bees have moved into the top super just go ahead and remove the bottom one?
What if there is still honey and pollen in the bottom? Arent they going to need it?
What about leaving the brood chamber on the top if I do reverse? Will this cause a problem?

Fall reversal

I was wondering if anyone here does a fall reversal? In other words, if your bees are mainly in the top supers going into fall/winter, do you put them down at the bottom and the empties at the top? I figure that it is better to have the bees down low going into the winter. What does everyone think? JC

From what I can tell, Jack and Chuck are currently having difficulty filling all the orders for queens being requested. I doubt that you could get a Spring queen if you wanted.
Does anyone have any ideas?

taper candle bubbles

I seem to have trouble with my taper candles when pouring. While they pour OK, I consistantly have too many bubbles in the surface. The bubbles are small but annoy me and I do not consider them first quality.

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks,

How many years do they estimate before the bees make it up to good ol' North Carolina?

Wow! Sounds like a profitable trip or at least we shall see.
Most beekeepers are very helpful and most seem to be very talkative.
We do what we can when we can!

Congrats Richard!

Kind of stinks that the hives are not already painted.
2 options...
Install and paint after the bees are in the hive or leave them in their respective packages until the equipment is painted and dry.

Bummer!

Beth: Usually the easiest way to tell if a hive is about to swarm is if you see the swarm cells on the bottom of the frames. Usually about 9 out of 10 swarm cells will be built on the bottom of the frame. So without actually pulling each frame individually, you can simply lean the brood chamber or s...

Hi Beth: Sounds like you did most everything right. My guess is that the bees had been in the swarm cluster for a while. What time did you see them? Anyway, perhaps the scouts had already found another locaion and you caught them just as they were getting ready to take off. I have heard that if you ...

Any signs of swarming

:?: I know the weather was unusually warm in January. What does eveyone think about it (the weather) leading to early swarming? I heard that the bees swarmed in February one time. It's already March and the weather has been nippy. Do you think the bees are building up quickly and might swarm soon? JC

Well, Mine are going into winter about the same. I cant believe how much I had to feed them this year. I thought the fall flow would help more but it didn't. I am looking for a better year next year. It will only be a couple of months before we start feeding again for the Spring buildup. Best of luc...

Sugar syrup

Hi everyone. :D I was wondering what you folks are doing for sugar syrup this fall? Is there any source for premixed syrup or do you have to do it yourself? Sure would be nice if there was a local source. What's the best place to buy sugar? Is table sugar the best or can you use something else? Let ...

Fall honeyflow

I was wondering how much honey should we expect in this area around the fall months? I know that Goldenrod and aster are the main sources but is there enough to harvest?
