Swarm-7/6/24

Post by Jacobs »

My neighbor was harvesting figs around 7:00pm on 7/6 and spotted a softball sized swarm in one of his fig bushes. I shook them into my swarm bucket, located the queen and got her in a catcher clip. I put them in a nuc with a very small amount of 1:1 in an inner cover cut to take regular mouth jars. They have tried to leave twice that I know of. I'll probably release the queen this evening. I don't have any hives that are good candidates for having put out his small swarm/abscond.

I released the queen yesterday and the bees took off again. They just didn't go far enough. They went to my fig bush and I was able to get the queen back in a clip. I may add a frame of open brood, or I may just instruct them to go high enough or far enough that I cannot retrieve them.
