The swarm I got from Greensboro on April 25 seems to have been trained (lol) to go in one direction. The inner cover had a cutout for a top entrance. They have always used the top opening even when it was small. They would have a traffic jam at the top opening fall down onto the bottom board and fly back up to the top and continue to jam in that opening. I have since made the top opening larger and the traffic seems to flow in ok without much waiting. However, they do not exit from the top, they only appear to exit from the bottom board.
It would be intresting to know what kind of hive they had before maybe a tree or someone that used top entrances.
One way bees
Wierd
That is wierd. I was at the strawberry field today, and one of the pollination hives had a two inch hole bored into the bottom deep, about 6 inches up from the bottom board entrance. You could see into the hive and see the end bars. It appeared that the bees were only using that entrance.
One of the other hives was about 6 or 7 mediums above the brood box, and it was leaning about 40 degrees. I looked at that, and thought to my self, "If that were mine, it would topple before I got home".
