Rewaxing plastic foundation

Post by bdloving »

Hm, several boxes of moth-eaten plastic foundation in wood frames.
I can scrape the junk off. but then, how much do I need to clean them before painting on some wax?

How badly silked and tunneled up is it? If most of the comb is still o.k. you may want to use it in a strong hive and let the bees clean it up and keep using the comb. If you cannot save the comb I don't think you need to get to spotless plastic, but I would want to get to where the outline of the cells would serve as a guide for cell building. You also may want talk to Wally about the +/- of certain varieties of BT for comb protection.

If I have enough bees to play with this year, I want more drawn deep frames and have painted a heavier beeswax coating on new plastic foundation to see if that will help with more complete comb building. I would do the same application for plastic foundation I scraped clean and intended to re use.
