I have had the oportunity to observe many behaviors over the years of bees doing things that are not suuposed to do according to the books. Of course we teach one thing and they do something else. It is always fun to learn something new.
Last Saturday I fed many of my bees. I only use top feeders. I happened by one yesterday afternoon (high of 39) and looked in to see if they had consumed the sugar syrup.
To my surprise they were working it as I popped the top. The cluster was most likely near the top and they must have had sufficient warmth to venture the addition 4 plus inches to reach the food. :o It is always fun to see them do something you think that they will not do.
