Bee Presentation

Post by Jacobs »

I just finished my first school presentation of this season. I took a frame of brood in an observation hive and other beekeeping equipment. Temperatures and conditions were marginal for this morning so I did not spend any time looking for the queen or opening up the nuc any more than was necessary.

I met with a combined 4 classes of kindergarten students. They were better behaved than I was at that age (or since).

The stumper was "What is bee skin made of?" My first impression was chitin, but I wasn't positive, so I told them I would look it up and e mail the teacher. According to The Hive and the Honey Bee, it is chitin, proteins, and pigments.

We need to set up a "speakers bureau" page when we line up more speakers from the club. I know folks are doing presentations in their communities, but we haven't coordinated or tabulated our efforts. I would be curious to know the coverage/outreach we are providing.
