linseed oil vs paint

Anyone use linseed oil rather than exterior paint? Any thoughts about which is better?

I have not used linseed oil, I painted all of my boxes except for 2 or 3 cedar boxes that I just left natural and they turned somewhat dark.

Thanks for the input. The links were really helpful. Sounds like paint is the better option.
