Attacked

Post by ski »

I had my hive open and was sliding a frame when a giant bee swooped down grabbed a honey bee and was flying off when I swatted and knocked it down and then beat it with my hive tool a few times.

European Hornet, and yes, they are carnivorous. They pack a heckuva wallop, too, so don't let one hit you.

I killed my first European Hornet of the season in front of my hives this evening. I was rusty with my trusty hat, but it made the mistake of giving me a second shot.

My first season I watched my little Russian girls swarm and kill a European Hornet that was trying to enter the hive while I worked it. The swarmed the intruder, covering her. After about 15 min. the bees dispersed and the hornet was dead.
