When is it too late to split a hive

Post by p51d »

When is it considered too late in our year to consider splitting hives? The goal is to have a number of new hives for next year. I would be adding a queen if they are still available for purchase.

It depends on the size of the hive. You can split and add a laying queen in October if each half of the split receives 40 lbs. of honey and 20,000 bees. I wouldn't try to split a single deep hive after May.
