Hi everyone,
My wife and I would like to start a bee hive, but I was wondering if it is too late to get started? Also, what is a ball park figure $$, to get started. We'll probably need everything.
We have lots of questions, as I'm sure you are used to most beginners asking.
Thanks,
Duane
Too late to start for this Spring?
Re: Too late to start for this Spring?
It is not too late to get started, but you need to get going soon. I don't know if Beez Needz or Triad Bee Supply have any package bees available, but if they do, they are around $110.00 plus tax for a 3lb package of bees with a queen. If you are limited to starting with nucleus (half hives), those are in the $175.00-185+ range. Add hive equipment, smoker, veils, etc., and you are probably looking at $500.00+ to get started with 2 hives and gear (minus extra smoker) for 2 people. These are only ball park figures. Getting bees soon is the key. If you can put together equipment and paint it, you can save some money, but you may need to buy assembled starter kits if there is not time to get package bees (if available), get equipment assembled, get it painted, and have time for it to air out before introducing bees. We have links to both of these local suppliers on our home page.
