Swarms 4/9/19

Post by edfuselier »

Two swarms on Tuesday. Came home about 2pm to hear a roar in the backyard. A hive was in the middle of swarming despite the fact that it had been split several weeks ago. They settled 25 feet in my neighbor's tree. After trying to coax them into a swarm trap that was attached to an extension ladder, I decided to climb up and get them myself. Later that afternoon saw a clump of bees on a dogwood tree in the front, and put them in a 10 frame box. Both colonies are now at the Piedmont Environmental Center. Glad the folks at GCBA warned me to always have extra equipment on hand!

After a 5-way split and 3 swarm captures, I'm out of 'extra' equipment. NOT a bad problem to have. . . In about 3 weeks time, I've gone from 3 hives to 11.
