I was one of 166 folks that gathered at the Folks Arts Center in Asheville on November 13 to hear Jamie Ellis, Debbie Delaney, Jay Evans, and Marla Spivak. The speakers were great and the Folk Arts Center was a nice place to visit.

If I can ever read my notes I may post what I found interesting.

The Buncombe county beekeepers seemed to be an energetic and inspiring group of beekeepers. They conduct a beginners course an intermediate course and are now looking to conduct research in some way. They seemed to be open at this time on how that may work but invited anybody that wanted to help in the research area with your hives at home to contact them.

Every one of these meetings I attend either at the state level, EAS or this Western North Carolina for Honeybee Research gathering I learn something new, meet some new folks and become inspired in a beekeeping kind of way. IF you haven’t attended any of these I would recommend it.

Subject: Letter to New Frontiers Attendees

Hello Everyone

In exactly one month the Center for Honeybee Research will host its second annual Event, "What Turns Bees On" at the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville - featuring Tom Seeley of Cornell University.
If you haven't read "Honeybee Democracy" or "Wisdom of the Hive" you're missing some of the most fascinating insights into bee behavior available anywhere. Maybe you'd like to come listen to him in person?
Dr. Seeley will be joined by Dr. Gro Amdam, Dr. David Tarpy, and Dr. Christofer Bang. Tickets are $35 prepaid and $45 at the door. For more details and to register please visit http://www.honeybeeresearch.org

You're receiving this e-mail because you attended last November's "New Frontiers in Beekeeping". The Center would like to express its gratitude for your support and wants you to know your participation is crucial for bringing this kind of
thing to our region. We'd like Dr. Seeley to be greeted to a packed auditorium so our regional reputation continues to grow.

We apologize for scheduling on a Sunday - the only weekend we could pry Dr. Seeley down South, the auditorium was taken for Saturday - but advantages are traffic should be minimal and Fall colors in the mountains should be nearing peak.

In the months since last November, the Center has registered it's By-Laws and Articles of Incorporation with the state of North Carolina, developed a logo and set up a web site. We also have a group page on FaceBook. In August we received official approval from the IRS and are now a legitimate 501-C (3) non-profit with the right to accept tax deductible donations. Several research proposals are being developed for which we will seek funding beginning December 2011.

Currently, cataloging entries for the first annual "Black Jar Honey Contest" has been completed and winners will be announced at the October event. Three beekeepers will be awarded a total of $525 along with their ribbons and bragging rights to the best tasting honey in the land. We can't reveal the identities of our 'celebrity' judging panel at this time - but they are influential business and civic leaders NOT associated with beekeeping. The Center feels it essential to introduce real, local honey to consumers who currently lack access. If you missed this year's Contest, start making plans to enter next year.

May your bees live long and prosper!
