Franklin County, NC -- A dog in Franklin County died after he was stung by hundreds of bees.

Ashley Seagroves told WRAL that her 4-year-old dog, Mika, was chained near his dog house when she found him covered by hundreds of bees when she came home Monday.

"I wish I would have come home and he would have already passed away so that I didn't have to see him passing away in front of me," Seagroves said.

The bees belonged to a neighbor who owns farmland behind Ashley's home. The man said he used the bees to help grow cucumbers. He told WRAL that he didn't know anybody was living on that land and that if he knew there was a dog there the bees would have been moved differently.

The bees were moved Monday after the incident.

The Franklin County Animal Shelter gave Ashley and her family a free puppy.

Animal control is still investigating this incident and will determine if charges will be filed. The Department of Agriculture is also investigating to figure out why the bees were so aggressive.
